I have an 07 FLHX and an 08 FLHTCU. Both have the 5th gear whine(NORMAL) that`s is not a problem.
When you service it at 1K just use Mobil 1 90-w-140 and the noise will be all but eliminated.
The 08`s are improved over the 07`s. Cams, Fly by Wire, Primary gear change, 6 gallon tank, improved crank bushing, IDS alongwith others.
I like both my bikes and have had ZERO problems. The SG has been modded and runs very well with no heat issue`s thanks to DTT/WEGO IID and RHTD`s. Buy the 08 and by the time you get 1K on it the SERT will be available so your can add pipes and an air cleaner. JM2$
THE IDS HAS NO EFFECT ON 5TH GEAR WHINE ISSUE`S...[8D]
Like drdiesel1, I put Mobil 1 75W-90into the transmission when I dropped the fluids at 1,000 miles. No more noise, no IDS needed. For both 07 and 08 fifth gear is cut different so you know you are in fifth (you can hear it), it is normal. As far as heat goes, if you don't like a little heat in stop an go traffic, but a Honda. Otherwise, get your air cooled engine now because in a couple of year they will be history. Air cooled engineswon't be able to pass future EPA standards.
I don't think anyone is really '07-bashing. I just can understand the '07 owners who had gravel gears riding the bike out of the dealership would be upset by having the serv. dept. saying, "that's normal" , or "well, some bikes are louder than others." Knowing that was an engineering/design flaw, it should've been corrected by MoCo on their dime. As far as I'm concearned, we're all on the same side here as riders no matter which model and year you ride.
