Here's my new bike. It's the 2008 105th Anniversary Edition Ultra Classic. I've only had it about 48 hours and due to work I've only got 180 miles on it. My impressions:
1) throttle by wire: responsive and a little different, but you get used to it after about 50 miles at the most;
2) ABS works great...kicked in on a quick stop and pulse of pedal and hand control not bad or so unusual that it causes you to "let go"; and Brembo brakes are a lot better than regular stock in older bikes
3) CopperTop color much better looking outside in real sunlight...I like it a lot;
4) IDS can't really tell much difference from my '05...bike is smooth;
5) Six gallon tank is great and it just doesn't look odd or "too big", it's a nice fit;
6) Heat is not bad at all...but you've got 96" about 4 inches from your crotch so there is what a reasonable person would expect imho;
7) Front forks feels light when turning compared to my '05 and it feels like it bottoms out on small pot holes so I'm replacing the fork oil w/SE fork oil at the 1K service;
8) Fifth gear whine is hard to hear and not a problem;
9) Sixth gear is great...at about 2,900rpm it's doing a smooth 80;
10) Air wings are much better than the Kuryakan brand I had on my '05...these new ones direct a lot more air towards you (nice in our 97 degree fall weather!);
11) Radio w/direct connector to my XM Roady II and my iPod work great;
12) Seat is comfortable for me so far...I miss my leather seat, but it won't fit on the '08;
13) Height...you sit about half inch higher, but not enough for me to install the shorter shocks and front springs;
14) Handling...just great, like my '05 ...very smooth...less vibrations...must be that IDS and/or the motor mount on top of the front head?;
15) imho, I was having second thoughts about getting the bike due to some of the "things" we read on this forum, but this is my fourth bike since 2004 ('04 BMW RT; '05 BMW LT, '05 Ultra) and I must say that it is a very nice bike and worth getting one, esp. w/ABS.
I'm glad you like your new ride. I didn't think I would like the copper and black based on the website but it really looks good in the real world. Ride safe.
I have a Vivid Black (with no pinstripes or tank badges and streetglide fenders) paint set thatI was going to put on mine. Went to a bike show over the weekend and saw an 08 Aniversary Softail Classic in the copper / blackcolors all done up with wheels and other modifications. It really stood out from the crowd.I am now having second thoughts. That softail was a sharp looking bike. The color combination is growing on me also.
I had an 07 Ultra and loved it but got the 08 for the ABS and larger tank. Love the 08 even more. I can't wait for the 110" kit in October.
