Decel Popping Problem
The`02 Ultra I purchased a couple months ago has a lot of decel popping. The bike already had thestage 1 kit installed(the SE air cleaner, V&H 2 into 1 Propipe HS, and mapping). The previous ownerattempted toget rid of thepopping; said he had it back to the dealer a couple times. This poppingdoesn't bother me as much as the tremendous amount of discoloration two thirds of the way back the exhaust pipe. Also, even though the gas mileage isn't bad,38 to 40 mpg,the motor doesn't have muchpulling power in 4th or5th gear. Maybe a bagger is supposed to be that way? All I know is that my wide glide (which is obviously lighter), doesn't have any trouble on the hills.
The combination of all theseissues tellsmethe fuel mixture isn't correct. The condition of the plugs, however, is good, telling methecylinders aren'trunning too lean. Sothen why the discoloring? In reading these posts, I thought maybe the V&Hfuelpak would eliminatethe popping. The techat fuelpak tells meI have to take the bike back to thestock mapping in order for thefuelpak to work.
Other thanliving withthe popping and using chrome polish on the pipes, does anyone else have any words of wisdom?

I had an exhaust leak that caused a lot of popping . It was at the connection of the header pipe to the muffler. I changed out muffler clamp and retighten all remaining clamps to propper torque.95% of the popping is gone.
Have an 02 with the stage 1 download and a pcIII. Still pops on hard decel. I replaced the gaskets when I swapped pipes thinking this was it and no luck. I got most of the popping to subside with the way I ride so I am happy for now. One day I'll figure it all out...
I have a 2001 FLHTPI That has Rinehart TD and Stage 1 breather and Power commander III. When I first put this setup on with the canned program from there website i didnt have any pop but fouled plugs like crazy!! I took it in to a good dyno tuner (who said the thing was so fat -Rich- in low rpm range that the machine wouldnt read that high!!) I could instantly feel the diffirence in power (and heat)!! But I had that dreaded pop on decel so I saved there dyno setting and started to monkey around with the setting on the power commander and now have the 0 throttle position at 15 from 0 rpms to 3000. I only have a pop once in a while and probably could tune that if I worked at it. Just go into the program for your tuner (If they all work like PC does) and bring those neg values in0 throttle position up until the pop is gone!!!
Your diagnosis is absolutely correct; the fuel mixture isn't correct. Most canned maps, especially those from Dynojet, tend to run very lean in the low throttle percentage and rpm range. I don't know what kind of adjustment capability you have, but the starting point is to add fuel in the 2, 5, and 10 percent throttle range and in the 1500 to 2500 rpm range. You can add as little as 2% at a time, and you should see reults quickly. Watch your tach as you listen for the popping, and that can help you learn where to add the fuel.
Once you've gotten this taken care of or under control, see how your 4th and 5th gear roll-on's respond. If no improvement, there's a good chance that you're running rich in the higher throttle percentage/rpm range. It's not uncommon for maps that are lean on the bottom to be rich nearer the top. Experiment in this area as well.

Uncle Peepers is correct. I got rid of all my decell popping by adding fuel in the low throttle positions and in the 1000 to 2000 rpm range. If I remember right I only added fuel in the 2 and 5 throttle position. As far as the stage 1 download I cant speak for the fuel pack but I know with the Power Commander the ECM does not have to be at the stock mapping.
