Last night on our 1997 Road King a red light came on (in the forth spot on a bar of 5), and a few minutes later it started knocking like it was low on oil ( it wasn't). We never lost power or anything. Does anyone know what this could be... and what do each of those 5 lights indicate. I know that the first lights is left, 3rd is neurutal, and and 5th is right, what would the second and fourth be. Thanks.
Your problemdoes not sound good.....sorry!
Those lights are: Left Turn Signal; High Beam; Neutral; Oil; Right Turn Signal.
If the red light came on, one of4 things happened, either you lost oil pressure, the wire grounded, wire fell offor the sending unit failed. Because you said it was knocking I am going to go with that you lost pressure.
Do you have a mechanical pressure gauge on the bike?
I would get a mechanical gauge and install it. Double check the oil level. Remove the spark plugs, ground the wires and then turn it over like your starting it and see if the gauge indicates any pressure. It should still show some pressure even when just turning it over with the starter. If you show pressure, then reinstall the plugs and start it up and let it idle and see if you have pressure. Try that and let us know the out come.
Kasper, that's nice ride you have there. Is that one of the SE's or did you trick it out like that. Nevertheless, nice...
Thanks for the complment. No this is not and SE, it is just a standard Roadglide that Icustomized myself. I do all my own bike work and lots for my friends. One of my friends painted this for me 2 years ago in his garage, we trade off work and help each other out. This bike is being repainted this winter using the same colors but with a different theme.
No doubt in my mind based on your description you have lost oil circulation.
Unless you are out of oil (check the dipstick and see--you say it isn't), then it sounds like oil pump has failed.
Take it to a reputable independent or the dealer.
wires disconnected or bad sender may cause light to come on, but will not cause the ticking / knockingsound that you say got.
