All this week I was in full negotiation with 4 dealers on an 08 SG/EG and today I finally told the 3rd one they could keep their bike and thieving fees. I still have some pride. Tomorrow the wife and I leave Virginia for a 10/12 day trip to Memphis then a week touring the Ozarks. On the way I will be stopping by that last dealer and give him the "Last chance" that he asked for. I suspect I'll be letting him know also that I ain't bending over for millionaire dealers (Hope I don't have to eat these words). Anyway, there is one and only one reason I would buy an 08 and that's the anti-lock brakes. I was riding behind a friend recently when he went down. I had a great view and it wasn't pretty though he got off with a broken shoulder. Seeing him lock the rear brakes then let off the rear brakes then get back on the rear brakes, thereby throwing him into the, death wobble, convinced me of the value of anti-locks. Who wouldn't go back after a bad wreck and pay thousands for anti-locks. You have a chance to do it now. I say do it You may save a leg , a back, a head. What's it worth to not have to see your spouse laying smeared all over the highway. Sorry for rambling but I feel that strong about the ALB's.
Tested the ABS out on a police bike.... and I was so impressed that when I ordered my new bike I made it mandatory !! The bike ships on Oct 3 ... it'll be here soon... can't wait !!! EEEEEEHA !!!!!
I just got mine yesterday so havent had to really use them. When I ordered my bike I wanted nothing else after considering the option.I waited the extra time and extra money but think it was wisest choice
In 2004 we were on a charity fund raising ride. About 400 people on a 2 day, 1000 mile, trip. About 2 hours into the ride we were in the mountains when a deer jumped out in front of our 5 bike group. The first2 of us were able to brake and slow enough but the third rider locked up his rear tire. He went into a slide, let off and relocked the brakes. He went down and slid into the oncoming lanes and was hit head on by a full size pick up truck. His 12 year old grandson was riding on the back. The last thing that my friend did was reach back as they slid across the road and tossed his grandson to the side enough to miss the truck. He hit it head on. We did CPR for 45 minutes before medical help arrived but we were not able to bring him back. I firmly believe that if he had ABS, he would be here today.
You don't know if or when you may need safety gear. If we knew ahead of time, we wouldn't ride on the day we were going to crash. I ordered my new 08 ultra with ABS even though I knew the wait would be much longer to get the bike. I say it's 100 % better to have it and not need it than it is to need it once and not have it. I have to think that my friend would agree....
