My 06 RK custom ships December 23rd. The parts dept. is calling me from Memphis asking what I want installed when it arrives. This is my first HD after being on a Honda for a few years. I know I want a windshield and passenger backrest. Any suggestions for thse? Or other things? I really don't feel pushed to do alot quickly, probably because i don't have the $!
Your dealer will probably send you the accessories catalog (a.k.a accessories phone book) turn to the Road King section and start with the first accessory listed. When you buy it cross it off in the catalog and move on to the next accessory when you buy that cross it off and go to the next. Do get my drift. It is endless. By the way when your all done you will have $39,475.23 invested in your scooter. Sometimes I even crack me up. I bought a RK custom last year. I originally went with what you went with. Make sure you get a windshield that is full sized. I screwed up and got that little mini windscreen. The thing just pushes all the air up in your face. Gets VERY tiring at 80 for a couple of hours. Other things I bought afterwards was highway pegs and a rider backrest.
not sure if the dealer is going to charge you to put the items on for you, but the cool thing about harleys is most of the stuff (like windshield, passenger backrest ("sissy bar")) are detachables, which means they're relatively SUPER EASY to install. My dad has a '05 RKC and we installed all his goodies ourselves. You really don't need to be a mechanic to figure it out, plus Harley usually gives some good instructions.
Don't rush! As exdo1 said you will get a catalog and you can go through and pick exactly what you want. I know this one stealership, I mean dealership in my area and they put on a lot of extras up front (ex: floor boards, grips etc..) and you end up seeing another set that you like better. I would take it stock unless you are SURE of the extras you want to add. Believe me, you don't get a discount for doing anything upfront.
Make sure the backreast pad is smooth as some people have problems with the seams bothering their back. Not sure how much the seat differs from the SG, But I like the SG seat with no problems for riding.

yeah, dealt with that with my last ride. The top came up to my chin and the buffeting nearly took my head off over 65 MPH. I'm 5'9". You think the standard height is about right? I'm thinking of doing the windshield at the dealer (make the 70 mile trip home in December a little more pleasant! Although my *** could freeze to the seat and I'd still be grinnin') and installing the rest at home. Actually got the catalog a day or so after I put down the deposit. Looking at it make my heart pound[sm=drooldude.gif]! Picking it up gave me a hernia.

Yeah the standard height is good. There is also a tall shield available, but I thought it looked a little too tall for my taste. I would highly recommend a windshield for riding 70 miles in December, even if you do live in the near tropics.
I had a detachable windshield installed when I bought my 06 RK Custom. After a week I went back and bought a sundowner seat and detachable backrest for the passenger and a set of streamliner chrome passenger floorboards. At 1800 miles I had stage 1 with a SE airbox and SE slip on mufflers with the Harley download...I know that download was wrong...I will be buying a PC111 for Christmas and get it dyno tuned.
