Default Pulling A Trailer

Some of you may think you would never pull a trailer but if you ride two up and travel far you know how much space is a premium. I have had two camp trailers a Backwoods Bungalo which was a large fiberglass body where you erected the tent around it and slept off the ground (pain in the ***) The other a Kwik Kamp which would go up in just 3 minutes. Both have lots of cargo area but in my opinion Kwik Kamp was the way to go. For one reason or another they dont make he Kwik Kamp anymore but there are similar camp trailers like the Bunkhouse which has a new smaller version now, the Windward (big) and the Trailmaster has 3 different models to choose from and there are many more models out there. I have also had 4 Bustecs which are cargo trailers including the one I now have a Bushtec Roadstar. Now you have to realize that I have had all these trailers over the last 25 years of riding.

In the old days I had a cargo trailer with leaf springs and when it hit a pot hole it could come off the ground. The Bushtecs will not bounce. The busthec does not have your typical torsion axels but a unique set of torsion rods with air shocks and 16" motorycle type wheels. The Bushtecs range in Cubic Feet from 19 to 25.

If you pull a fully loaded trailer (300lbs) and ride two up on a Twin Cam 88 Ultra you may notice the bike working a bit as you hit some grades but it is not a problem. On flat road or freeway you dont even know it is there. With the ice chest mounted on the tounge it makes it great for having that cool beverage whenever you want. Trailer brakes are not needed on the cargo trailers. Some of the big tent trailer companies are offering brakes? None of the trailers I have had, had brakes.

You should stack all the stuff you want to take along, tent camping? Moteling? Wife? Significant other? and get a idea of how much room you need.

Check out Bushtec. Motivation also makes a really nice looking trailer.

I hate towing anything with a car, truck and couldn't imagine it with a MC. Especially on a bike it would really krimp my riding style. The wife and I over the last few years have made many long distance trips.....she gets 1 saddle bag and I get the other. The Tour Pak is community property. At first go things were a little over done, now she's pretty much got it down to a science......Not to mention I prefer a motel myself.

However, Thanks for a informative read, Ive wondered how it was to tow one.

Buddy of mine has a lee-sureLite that goes up in less than a minute if you hurry. Really a neat package. I will buy one if I find a deal on a nice used one. Haven't towed with my HD yet but did pull a cargo trailer with the Guzzi. I think the Guzzi is a little light for tow duty, but lots of folks do it.

I pulled a Bushtec trailer with my Goldwing and didn't have any trouble. Never knew it was even back there!

I pull a custom built trailer behind my 95 Ultraclassic. It is a 1/3 scale corvette fiberglass body on an all aluminum trailer with a torsion suspension. I had a different aluminum frame under the same body but it had a leaf suspension and you could feel every bump that the trailer hit. With the new torsion suspension I keep checking back there to make sure that it is still there. I carry a tent, sleeping bags, small cooler, fishing poles and what ever else I want in it. This way when my son and I travel we have plenty of room for our stuff and anything that we pick up along the way. I know that not everyone agrees with pulling a trailer but both my son and I agree that it is better than being in a car. I ride my MC everyday to work and back and even pull my trailer when I have to carry a large amount of stuff and it sure beats taking the truck.

If you're lookin for a nice, reasonable priced cargo trailer take a look at the web page I've listed below. I'm currently saving my beer night change to order one. Their XL model is even nicer with chrome wheels and a better axle.

In the '80's I pulled a Time Out camper all over the US. I loved pulling a trailer/camper but now in my old(er) age I go from hotel to hotel. No more sleeping in campgrounds for me...

Ride safe and think spring.

i have a trailer i tow behind the bike, its called neosho trailers, its nice and i love it. we pack all the camping gear and stuff in it and it works well.I made a little platform for the tounge so I could put the cooler there but when I tried it and the cooler was full, mind you it is just a 12 by 12 cooler it was to heavy and i got front wheel wobble when i went around corners.

HOWEVER:

I am purchasing a toy hauler cause the smokie mountains here i come this year. and since I live in maine and have 2 weeks to do this, i think its the way to go for long trips.
My 2 cents

My wife has M/S and needs a wheelchair to get around. We were did not want to stop riding, towing a trailer kept us on the road. We have a Bushtec Turbo 2. After a 2,500 miletrip this past summer that encluded Deals Gap wecould not be happier. We are able to take long trips again.

When we stopped after the wheelchair was out of the trailereveryone in our groupput helmets and jackets in the trailer. Safe secure out of sight.

You really don't know it is there 99% of the time. Have to keep checking the mirrors to make sure it is still there! The first time we took the trailer out on a long back road trip. We were on the road about a couple of hours when we stopped at a bathroom break. My wife said what are we going to do now the wheelchair is at home we did not take the trailer. How do you know?Bike rides to smooth to betowing anything. She sure was shocked tosee the trailer when we did stop!

Ridesafe and have fun
