My boot heel rubbed up against my hot exhaust while riding this week. The black rubber melted onto the pipe. Any suggestions on how to clean it off without scratching the chrome?
If you use the oven cleaner, warm the pipes and apry on a TOWEL and wipe the pipes. Do not spray directly on bike as I ahve read that people have damaged their finishes like that...
Use goo gone (brand name) solvent, or Alcohol while cold, or oven cleaner. DO NOT SCRUB with anything!
I used a solvent and extra fine steel wool. You can also use one of those plastic dish scrubbers. Neither will scratch the chrome. I always believe in trying the weakest solvent first and then working up. I found that "Goof off" worked. It is sold to remove dried latex paint. I also use 3M adhesive remover to get tar off my bikes and cars. Never had a problem.
BTW, I'm looking to buy some floorboard heel guards to keep my boots off the pipe. Do a search for heel guards and you'll see all you want on the subject. Good luck.

My sister melted half of her heel to my pipes last summer, just warm it up a little scrape the excess off with one of those plastic pot scraper things and then use the goo gone, cant even tell anything was there
