With my 89 FLHS I did just that, I removed the exhaust and had the hole patched. First time I did it we just patched the hole and it didnt hold up. Second time we made a bigger patch bent to fit and it worked good. I never had it dyno'd or anything but was happy with the performance. I saw it as less parts hanging from my bike. Looked good too!
Did you have popping issues at all? I have some popping now and it's really bad with my drilled mufflers. Some say the crossover pipecauses that? I wondered if it would go away with this mod done?
I speculate that blocking off the one pipe would help with decel popping, as it does suck in cold air. My dyno guy told me they have tried blocking on pipe on the dyno and it doesn't make any difference in numbers, it's basically just there for looks. The stock header pipes are actually pretty good performers and there free!
