Default 2004 Classic purchase

I'm lookin at a 2003 Classic with the 95 inch kit installed, 60,000 kms or about 45,000 miles on it. I'm not sure as to when the 95 inch upgrade was done. What should I be looking at for any future problems with this bike? Where there any re-calls or persistent problems at all? I have an 03 883 sportster right now that is just a fantastic bike. Thanks for your replies!!!

...just went through the search for a RKC, ending up with an '01. Luck will have some bearing on what you end up with when buying a "used" anything, of course, but do as much homework on the web as possible -- lots of searching. For example, there was a problem with cam bearings with a run that included the '99s (a couple of years, as I recall). The big bore upgrade may mean that other things have been changed or modified, so it may be difficult to inspect for anyone who hasn't done this sort of work -- maybe you can find a local/qualified tech to do a pre-buy? Otherwise, expect there to be "complete" records for all work and look'em over good, comparing with what you can see as best you can while looking for oil leaks, stripped bolt/screw heads, scars and scrapes, etc. A clean bike with orderly and complete records can/should inspire some confidence. Good luck!

The cam bearing issuewas fixed mid year of 2000. I only know this because I had a 2000 Road King.

Munch,

Ultra Classic is a different beast than the Sportie. More things to inspect. Some stuff to look for:
- Find out when was the last major service done. (ie. 40k service). See if you can get the maintenance records for this service.
- When the 95 kit was installed, were the cams replaced? If so, were the cam chains converted to gear drive system? If not, were the cam chain tensioners replaced? The tensioners are made of plastic, and normally last only about 30k miles.
- With the 95 kit installed, was a dyno run done to recalibrate the ECM? What fuel management system (Power Commander, Race Tuner, etc.) was used to adjust fuel/air mixture? If dyno was done, get the run sheet print out to see both HP and TQ numbers.
- Motor Mounts: were they replaced or inspected? Especially the front mount. Rubber does wear and rot.
- Brakes: check for even pad wear, check fluids (front and rear) for water or setiments, inspect brake lines for chafing, rubber wear, etc.
- Wheels/Tires: check for wear (more wear in the rear), rubber rot, uneven wear pattern (ie alignment issue)
- Forks: check for oil residue and leaks
- Steering bushings: ask if the steering head bushings had been inspected and/or replaced. This is often an issue with baggers.
- Battery/Electrical: check battery for last replacement date. If more than three years old, it may need to be replaced. Start engine and check the volt meter for proper voltage.

These are some of the major items to check, but there are others that may need to be inspected. If it looks clean, rides clean, and feels good to you, then it's good bike. With the number of miles it has, close inspection is required.

Good luck!
