[:@]Anyone else have a starter fail at 5000 miles or less????? [:@]
Did you bike have the "slamming" sound when it started. Kinda like metal on metal? I know the 06s don't and the 08s don't but the 07s did. Mine does it but I am told that it is normal and will not cause the starter to fail. Has something to do with the compensator????
Had my 07 Ultra SE starter replaced 2 weeks ago, at about 10K miles. Thought that would solve the problem, but it is back in the shop with the same problems. Sounds like the gears are not meshing, or something like that. Almost sounds like it wont catch and leave me stranded..but then after several attempts it starts. Dealer checking with HD about warranty, and what to do next. I mentioned compression release problem and he said he would check into that too.
Hopefully, will know something today as to what plans are to resolve the issue, or even if it can be resolved.
Buddy's 07 SG made the slamming noise since new this year. Asked the dealer about it, and they let him listen to every bike they had, and all 07's made the noise. While riding to sturgis this year, it got worse, and yet another dealer said it was fine. Finally, when it stopped working, he had to resort to bump starting it, and took it to Rapid City's HD. Got the first class treatment there(yeah right lol). They had to replace the starter, and I believe the clutch basket/ring gear. Now he has no more noise, and sounds like my 07 when it starts..normal.
Dealer called me today said he had installed the IDS and that it appears that the starter problems is related to the compression release. Apparently, it isn't working right all the time. (bike did start sometimes right on the money)..so they are replacing that. Will know more about everthing tomorrow. Looking forward to startin up the first time and rolling down the hiway with no box of rocks...

Makes you wonder doesn't it? Is there some kind of conspiracy to cover up these problems? It's obviously too expensive for HD to recall and fix all of the 07s. They are just fixing them as they fail. The guys that ride a lot will get it fixed under warranty and all the other will get stuck with the bill. SUCKS doesn't it?
I know for sure that the 06s and 08s don't slam. It's just the 07s. What's up with that?
His bike did it since new, so far mine hasnt. Hes supposed to check on the production date of his. Im betting it was prevalent on the early 07s, if I were to guess.
