Default Remove fairing from FLHT

I've got a chance for a great buy on a 2002 FLHT. I wish it was a RK so that I could remove th windshield for around town riding. I'm afraid I know the answer, but here goes. Has anyone removed the fairing from an FLHT? How hard is it given all of the gages etc?

thanks

There are a ****-ton of small parts and trim parts you'll wish you had. Plus the whole headlight bucket and mounts. Under the fairing, the front end and top of the tree just look... unfinished. I'm not sure it's worth it. You'll need to buy the tank cowl or all the small parts to mount at least the speedo. You need one, by law. Beyond that, the good news is that the only wiring inside the fairing is what's needed for stuff in/on the fairing.

I had a Road King on the wall during my whole year in Korea (during a 1 year tour). When I finally went to lay down the cash for it, there where none available! I was so pissed, but that was the way that buying through the miliary sales worked, they only get a limited number bikes from Harley. They had one each Electra Glide Custom/Standard left, I took the standard and have never regreted it, even a little! For a while I thought I would just turn around and sell it to get a Road King, well after my first ride home with it, that went right out the window. I love my bike and can't imagine not having the batwing...... Go for it, you wont be sorry.

I own a rk custom. It is a beautiful bike, IMO. However, I sure wish I had a radio for long hauls. I even thought about getting a fairing, but my bars just will not allow it (to tall). Sure having the ability to remove the windshield is great, but with my bars, it will not fit, either. Just a thought for you.

I was thinking of removing my fairing this winter, but only for maintenance reasons. I've got a couple of gauges not working, and may put new bulbs in. The old ones are kinda dim. The bike is 20 yrs old, ya know.
I thought it would be a good winter project, among others, but I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle?

i hated my flht and converted it to a roadking... you will need a new fuel tank, wiring harness and a bunch of small parts...buy the parts book and get the tank on ebay..... i love the roadking conversion....

There is quite a bit to convert the FHLT to a RK. The lower forks/coversd are ok. But you'll need the nacelle. You'll also need the hardware for the windshield and the windshield. You'll need to change the interconnect wiring harness at the front end. The wiring harness is straight plug and play. You'll need to change the fuel pump/ sender, gas tank, and get a RK dash with a speedometer. You'll need the wiring connector for the different fuel pump connector. It's not that hard, just requires a lot parts, a little patients, and the abilitlty to read the service manual. If you need the parts, give Jason a call at Moroney's HD in New York (they offer a pretty good discount on HD parts), 800.327.8464, tell him Reubin recommended you call.
