Default newbie- needs advise-please

I was hit by a car last week and totaled out my springer, I should be able to ride by next spring. I am not a spring chicken anymore, so I am seriously looking at a Road King.I want to be able to take the winsheild off and stuff. I am only 5'7" so I would like to lower it but dont know how hard that is on a bagger or what my options are. Also any opinions on exaust like brand- true duals- 2 into1ect, I dont know the pros or cons to any of this. The other thing I would maybe like to do is a stage 2 kit. I have never had a new motor (i only had evos) so is the kit worth the $$$ or would you leave well enough alone? Sorry for the questions but I dont know anything about touring bikes or the new motors.
Thanks everyone.

Road lings are great, and are very comfy. I am only 35, and I love mine. Lowering the bike is not hard, but does cost some coin. The rk custom comes factory lowered, so that is one less thing you would have to worry about. They do not make it for '08, so if you want a new one, see if you can still find a '07. As far as exhaust goes. The concensus is to go with a 2-1 for performance. Right now, the d & d fatcat seem to offer the best. true duals give you the look I think a bagger should have, but some say you will loose lower end torque. Doing even just a stage 1, you will notice the difference. You will need to get a freer breathing air cleaner, some freer flowing pipes, and some kind of fuel management system. DTT, pc111, sert, or something that will reduce the lean condition set in the newer models from the factory. Otherwise, you will be looking at hotter than expected conditions. Hope this helps. Others will chime in shortly.

If you go with a road king you can lower the front and the rear or possibly go with a lowered seat to get you whwre you need to be. As for changing the bike performance wise the sky is the limit with what you can do. I would suggest you get the bike and add some slip on mufflers (I'm a Vance & Hines oval man myself) and see what you think as you can add true duel headpipes, high flow A/C etc. at a later date. Get the bike, ride it and then start your mod's if you want them.

If I where you I'd do lot's of reading up on all the questions that you have asked. You will get all kinds of different answers and opinions. You will have to decide your self on witch way to go.
My opinion doing the BB is worth every dime as long as all the parts are matched up. For performance the 2-1 is alot better then True Duals. Been there done that, I wished I'd found this forum sooner then I did. I'd saved alot of time any $$$$ good luck...........

Sorry to hear about the crash. glad you made it thru. I'm 5'6" and 180# had a road king that had 1" lowering shocks on it and was fine flat footing it. The ride was a little rougher than stock. A guyI work with did a 95" kit on his 2000 road king and it screams. Be sure and get the head work done as well as the AC/pipes/Fuel adjustment. His is a carb. Man its a Bad snortin' HOG. Pretty good looking also.

Glad you're OK, motorcycles can be replaced, we can not...
I know you stated that you like the RK because of the removability of the windshield, but you might want to check out the Street Glide....it's a lower bike and while the fairing is not quickly removable, it has does give you a radio for tunes ( I would not be without my music) and a little more protection along with hard lockable bags, also the option of adding a tourpac ( the chopped one look wicked on the SG).....

There are so many options and bikes, shop around, sit and think.....get what you want, not what someone here thinks....I have a Electra Glide Classic, have owned a few Ultras, never a RK ( although I think they look very good)....like I said, I like my music......but take your time......

If I were shopping for a new motor, I would have a hard choice to make, damm, they all look good!!!

I hope you will be ok.A road king would be an excellent choice if you want versitility. I had a road king and I liked it. I traded it for a streetglide. The touring bikes are the way to go in my opinion.

Put an air cleaner, pipes and a tuner of your choice (stage 1) ride it and then decide if you need to build the motor. I think all the time about building mine then I ride it and dont reallysee the need. A tourning harley is a very cool and comfortable bike not a racing bike.I still want the extra power. I dont need it. I want it. I dont need it.I want it. I dont need it.
