i have amsoil in the engine. the level is fine. but after warming up it ticks. i just put the ids on about a month ago to get rid of the clatter, but now i hear the engine tick. it sounds like it is low on oil, but its not. could the amsoil breakdown and cause the oil to be really thin and not lubricate well enough? i dont believe this theory but i have to ask.
Well, I run Amsoil, and I have the same click noise. Sounds like lifters to me. I had the same noise before adding Amsoil, so I am not worrying about it. LOL

I have to agree with Papa.I went the same route and my engine sounds the same aswhen dino oil was used.
A lot of people swear syn. oil makes engines quiet,I dont agree.
A basic tool every shadetree mechanic is a MECHANICS STETHOSCOPE!
Get one then use it! this will help you pinpoint where the noise is coming from!
It may becoming from the injectors which is normal.
But if it is coming from the lifters orthe rockers then no it is not normal.
If you find it is the lifters / rockers, drain the amsoil out and refill with a 20/50 dino oil or mobil one. run it again. If noise is gone fine. If not then it's tme for new lifters at a minimum.

My local parts counter stealer told me 'Syn 3' would make my engine quieter and 10* cooler ... I'm not so sure of that...

Might as well stick a 10 spot up his wazoo while your at it Syn 3 is the swill of pretend synthetic oils, its a low grade and not a true synthetic. Harley took the lowest offer from a oil company that would put it in their bottle. The harly dino oil is better than it is and half the price.
They all do, don't they? The multi-grade oil is an oil of the weight of the smaller number and is formulated to enable it to act as if it were the higher weight when at temperature.
I have, at nearly 9000 miles, much the same situation as initially described. I'm currently using Mobil1. It was the same with the "synthetic" oil the dealer put in at 1000 miles. It was also the same with whatever was in it when I picked it up at 9 miles.
It was the same with every motorcycle I've ever owned with whatever oil was in it at the time.
I can't say there's no problem with the original poster's setup because there's not enough specific information, but it doesn't "sound" like there's anything out of the ordinary to me.
