Default '08 Baffle Removal

Has anyone knocked the baffles out of their '07 or '08? I have a new SG coming in this week and I like the look of the stock mufflers, just would like a little more sound. I have done the Rinehart True dual thing, and Vance & Hines Ovals, both a little loud. I am just looking for a nice tone / rumble. I thought about the V & H tapered slash cuts, but haven't heard them, and I don't know what they would do without fuel / air adjustments, so I thought I would just do the stock thing for awhile, I must be getting old, sick of the noise? Thanks

Thats what i did, then for a little sound as you said same reasons, not too loud especially for long trips..ect I added se street performance one piece ,air, and sert..ect. I have not read or heard of too much luck messin with the stock pipes except from some guy on ebay that mods them.

They sound a lot better after about 3K miles.

The dealer I deal with had a city police bike in for some service and it got picked up while I was standing at the service desk. It had the mufflers gutted and sounded wicked loud. Way too much for my taste, anyway. But the tone and quality of sound was good. No way to do that without SERT, PC-III, or one of the aftermarket ECUs, though. It will change the exhaust dynamics beyond the auto-ranging capabilities of the stock ECU for sure.

glens, What if I just knock the baffle out, not gut the entire muffler? I am not looking for wicked loud, just alittle more sound with out doing the fuel management thing. I have heard that you can put slip on's on the '08's if that is all you do. So in essence isn't that all that I would be doing?

Hi bkpa,
I knock both center baffles out of my stock mufflers on my 06 Ultra, gave me the sound I wanted just right. Doesn't seemed to have hurt anything, added a little better performance but not much. I do not want a loud muffler, I like hearing my radio and talking with my better half while we ride, but I did want a little deeper sound. I have been well pleased with the way it turned out so far, I rode it bone stock for over a year and it was just to quiet. I just never could find the right pipes that had the sound I was looking far is the reason I decided to use an old trick we used "back in the day", I remember those days all to well. First I knocked out the end baffle to see how it sounded, then I knocked out the top one, and finally I drilled 6 - 1/4 holes in each muffler on the inside flanges equally spaced around it at the end of the pipe. Good luck.

I would not mess with stock mufflers if they have an EPA stamp on them, which is pretty much anything since the late '70s. The noose is tightening and I wouldn't be surprised if one day soon it'll be a requirement to have all the stock breathing apparatus on the bike to renew the plate. Wouldn't it be a shame to save a few hundred now only to have to spend twice that later?

You can get a set of Rush 2" baffle mufflers for about $300. It's what I have and heartily recommend. It sounds like the Wild Pigs available as seconds are almost half that and are pretty much the same thing. My stock units are standing in the corner.

Good point, but it still does not anwer my question. Can you just put slip on's on '08's? I like the looks of the Rush pipes and have heard A LOT of good things about them, but I do not want to do the a/c, fuel thing.

Does the Harley system adjust for the difference in exhaust?

Normally I would enter into a long response explaining in great detail how the stock engine control system works but I'm getting tired of doing it so often. Search for posts by me that contain "AFV".

Short story is that you can safely yank your stock mufflers (not the pipes) and put on 2" Rush units, or just about any other quality name-brand reasonably-baffled muffler, cinch down the clamps to 45 ft-lb and ride it that way until the sun burns itself out.
