I have been looking into buying an 08 HD, but in checking out cycle trader and craigslist, I see that there are some great prices on some of the slightly older, 200-2005 models.
This is a serious question, not some troll putting you on.
I would like to know the feeling among some HD owners about the values on the 88 CI's now that the 96's are here. With all the improvements in the new models, it seems to me the prices on these "old" bikes has fallen.
I'm really thinking about just going and finding an 03 100th anny Road King. I've only been riding about 4 years, and when I first started looking at bikes, I really fell for those models, but I wasn't ready to put out that kind of cash on something I wasn't sure I would stick with.
Four years, and about 35,000 miles and three bikes later, I can't get enough riding.
What really has me asking this question was a nice 03 I saw on Cycle Trader. Road King, Black and Silver, with about 2k on it. The price was $12,900. I would love to find a deal like this over the winter. I want to part out my metric over the winter, and use some cash I have set aside and shop for one like that!
Are any of you concerned that the NADA values will drop, and is it pretty much considered an anomaly that these bikes are priced this low. I did a search from 02-05, and not one Road King was over 15K. Those seem like great prices to me, and something I might do instead is getting a new one for 5K more and having to finance some of it. I like having things paid for. A mortgage and truck payment are all I want hanging over me.
Would you go for an 03-05 you could pay cash for,or go for the 2008, with all the new bells and whistles, and finance some??
Just keep looking on either Ebay or Craigslist. Irecently bought a loaded 2006 Road Glide with 5700 miles for $16200. You will find the right bike at the right price...I did.
Loaded meaning...
HD stage II big bore
EPA SE slip-ons (already switched out to Rhinehart slip-ons)
lowers (like on an Ultra)
chopped tourpak
chubby pullback bars internally wired
chrome hand controls
Cyclepedic seat (which is for sale)
HD Road Quest GPS
XM stereo upgrade
Clearview windshield (plus the HDstock and tall HD windshields)
I'll go with teh old, because #1 it will be paid for,and majority of the bikes of those years have a boat load of chrome goodies already on them and a lot of them already have the 95" kit installed!
Watch,if you get a older one i'll betit come with box of different parts and a couple of seats as well.
Thanks to both of ya! And I have noticed that even the low mileage bikes have work or chrome done to em! I plan on putting my ride up for sale when the temps hit the 30's here. As good a time as any, and it will give me time to strip it down and sell the bags, shield, and other stuff separate.
And GMoney, wasn't your bike a diff color?? I duck in and out of here when the HD bug bites me, and seem to remember that bike a blue color! I might not post a lot, but I do lurk!
Maybe it was a diferent ride, but I think I remember that one!
Nope, you are right about gmoney's ride, it was blue.
I bought my bike a year and a half ago. It is an '05, and at that time I got it for1500 less than a new '06 was going for. It had 770 miles on it, and I love the thing. The newer bikes are nice, but like you, I didn't want a payment, and the difference between the '06 and '05 is basically nothing. Then the '07 came out, and I was bummed for a bit. then, after being on this forum, I came to the conclusion I did just fine, and my bike will last me for a long time. For the 88", we have less EPA stuff to worry about. Yes, the value is dropping, but if you are concerned solely about resale, nothing with a motor holds it's value. Even a used '07 is worthless than a used '08. I, also like you, love the '03 model. Still is my favorite anniversary color. If you can find one in your price, and it is in good shape, get the thing. I have found in life that to be truly happy, you have to get what you want in the first place. JMHO.

The TC 88 is a good bike and there have been a LOT of low mileage, used bikes out there that I've seen. You'll see a bunch of people selling their "old" bike for brand new, some still trying to pay the things off. I would definitely go for it. I know guys with shovels, evos and earlier TC 88s that enjoy their rides just as much as the dude with a brand spanking new ABS equipped TC 96.
I bought an 01 E-Glide Classic with only 5000 miles on it last summer with new tires and new laced wheels for 12,000.00. It suffered from sitting in a garage more than anything else, the guy I boughtit from said some ofhis buds at work talked him into getting a Harley. After a couple months he decided that riding a bike was not for him and the bike just sat in his garage for years.I had to rebuild the carb and some minor thingssuch as a little rust here and there , but nothing real big.I just got back into riding after a lot of years and did not want to spend big money until I was sureI was going to enjoy it again.Needless to say, I will be buying a new one in a couple years and my son will be getting a deal onthe 01 with a lot of extra chrome !
Ive had 2, 07'sand a 08. I sold them all and bought a 05 roadking custom, 8k miles lots extras for 12,450.00 I have owned several 88ci baggeres and still love the bikes. Less heat from motor ,no noise from tranny and transmission is geared way better than the 6 speeds. My 08 ultra was heads above either of the 07s in ride and smoothness but to tell you the truth I like my 05 better, it has near same seat of pants power with the few mods it has and the lower gearing of the 5 speeds as the 96's did. If I didnt want to drop over 20k and I did, I would buy a older model without hesitation.
