just bought a '93 Ultra Classic...the previous owner has installed a SE-2 cam and adjustable pushrods...bike still has original CV carb (with some jet changes??) a fairly stock exhaust with Samson mufflers (no other engine upgrades) Needless to say, bike runs pretty poorly at under 2500 rpm and spits back fairly regularly through the carb at about any rpm...I'm not a happy camper as this is not a smooth running setup. I would like to change cam to an Andrews EV-27 that came withthe bike and is brand new. I would then rejet CV carb and keep the exhaust as is (its loud enough now). My question is: should I be able to just bolt in this new cam or do I have to change the gears that mesh with it as well? Anything else I have to worry about? I'm not soconcerned about power as I am about a smoother running engine over the rpm range for normal cruising.
I owned a 92 Ultra and did a full top end including the cam. Line up the timing marks and bolt it in if I remember correctly. The 92's had issues with a cheap rear cam bearing that needed replacing. I don't know if thatâs the case with the 93's. Are you sure the cam is your problem? Did the previous owner say it's run like that since the cam change? There were lots of SE cams that would be appropriate for an otherwise stock EVO. Do you know the specs on the cam thats in there now? A fourteen year old motor could certianly have other problems contributing to it's poor performance.
If you haven't already, look into cam end-play. Aftermarket cams tend to be a touch shorter than stock. You may need to add shim washersto reduce end-play with an aftermarket cam.

If you can, ask the previous owner if he moved the stock cam gear to the SE-2 that's in there now. Even if it isn't the original cam gear listen to it. If it's quiet, then press it off that Harley cam & swap it with the one on the Andrews cam. It'll be quieter.
Pay attention to the advice about shiming, & replace the cam bearing. It was origionally an INA bearing, but even if it's been changed to a Torrington it won't hurt to put in a fresh one. They're cheap.
