If everyone is having problems with a PC, and don't like adding something to the bike, why don't you just get a SERT? it isn't something that you add to the bike. It is the equipment that you use to load a map into the existing ECU. It can be used as many times as you want to load or adjust the maps in the ECU. Save your $ on the download, since in the long run you only pay for the SERT one time versus paying the dealer for a new download everytime you want to change the map.
I have had the HD Stage 1 downloaddone to my Ultra. It solved my spark knock issue and the bike seems to run a bit cooler. I had it done at the same time I put Rush 2.0 Slip-ons on. If you plan to change air cleaners or switch pipes frequently you may consider a fuel programmer. It may be cheaper in the long run. I paid $150 for the stage 1 remap at my dealer. Was it money well spent, probably so since the spark knock is gone. I know that it is HD's issue, but I coulnd't sit there and listen to my way to expensive toy destroy itself internally.
I always keep old take off parts. Call me a pack rat, but if I have a problem, I can put it back on. Really all you would need to put back on would be the stock air cleaner. You'll be fine with the pipes, the AC makes the most difference in the A/F ratio. Sometimes you can find the download module on ebay cheap. You still have to pay a dealer labor to install it, but you can usually just pay the 30 min rate, about 40 bucks. I paid 25 for the module.
When my PC turned into a brick flashing it when my laptop battery died, I put my stock airbox back on for the week the PC was gone. That's a good and viable temporary solution (but then I had to also stick the stock mufflers back on for a few minutes to reset my AFV before going back to the in/out/control changes). But it won't help you get home if you're on the road and the PC dies. Although I'd feel pretty confident putting the O2 sensors back on line and staying in closed loop to get home....
I wouldn't waste the money on the download in this situation. I know it wouldn't satisfy me by itself and I know there aren't many if any maps running around for the PC with a "downloaded" ECU. That means a dyno tune and the total then would be nearly as much as a DTT. If I was going to spend that kind of money the DTT would already be in service.

You mention maps for flashed ECM. I noticed that there are none on the Dynojet site. Do you have any idea where people are getting them?
Steve
There are plenty of maps for the stage 1 download on the Dynojet site. You may have to scroll down to find them. At least that's the case for my bike. Also, I had Jamie send me a map for my config with the stage 1 download.
As to why I went with the download and not the SERT, because I'm CHEAP!
Took my bike ot the dealer today. The service manager told me that they do not have a download for my set-up. They only have one for HD parts, not V&H. So, I didn't do it. I'll continue to run the PCIII as is. If I have problems with it, I may switch to a Tmax.
Steve
I've had the H-D Stage 1 download from day one. My bike has been running great with no issues. Starts easy. Gas mileage averages at about 42 mpg. Power is more than adequate for me, and that is with two-up riding most of the time. I know alot can be done with a fuel management system like a Power Commander, but I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
