Default RKC shears off pully bolts/ no IDS

Could the harsh hammering of the new 96" engine be putting too much strain on the pully bolts? Service manager at the local HD shop told me a story about his pully bolts shearing off on his 07' RKC. He said it happened pretty quick without much warning. I wonder if the different vibration caused by the longer stroke of the new 96 without the IDS could be the cause of this. Think about the logic. The vibration we were feeling before the IDS is being transferred to those same bolts. Lugging the engine would even make it worse. His explanation for the IDS install on the 08's was to make it a smoother touring bike. Just a thought. T.

The only way that would happen is if they were loose or bottomed in the holes. IDS got nothing to do with it. In the "real reason" thread I said the same thing: if the IDS were anything different than a "smoothing the ride on the baggers" it would be on all the '08 big twins. Well, at least the Dynas, too. Them Softails lose too much power spinning that out-of-balance shaft.

Another wet dream, night mare, made up story. If the bolts were loose? Maybe. With out warning? You would hear drive train noise. Lets see the pictures. Back this made up story with some Facts.

How about all those S&S motors? 124 and up Look at the bolts holding them on. How about all the choppers? Do they have all the noise? No they doe not!

glens, maybe you and the service guy are right. This is my first Harley so I thought the harshness was normal. After riding my buddies 06' Ultra and feeling how smooth it was there was just way too much difference in the smoothness between the two. I have to believe that harsher hammering has to take it's toll on something, crank, compensator, chain, belt, pulley, pulley bolts, anything that the vibration is transferred to. T.

The guy showed me a bolt. It was sheared smooth off. I stated that it happened without much warning. He said he was going down the freeway and was alongside one of those concrete barriers and heard a funny noise but thought it was from an 18 wheeler. about a mile down the road he heard a loud bang and that was it. He said he should have pulled over back when he heard the funny noise. T.

1, one? bolt. could it be a weak bolt? With the way Quality control is these days. I could understand a bad bolt getting on the bike.

Glen's a 100% right, most of the time that I've seen sheered off bolts was because someone has done a wheel or pulley chnage and has replaced it with the wrong length bolts or they never loc tightened the bolts in and theybacked out. I did see once on a Fat Boythat had the rear pulley replaced in chrome with the factory HD bolts and it broke half of them. I was never told 100%, but I believe there was an issue with the chrome plated bolts that were supplied by the dealer. Now we do see some exceptions on some of the higher HP bikes we built that have broken bolts, broken belts and have sheered the center hub out of a billet
pulley. But you have to consider the rider, most of those guys record large over rev hits on there computer of over 6200 rpm.

The bolt that holds my passenger floorboard sheared off and it doesn't have any hammering on it. I think it is just bad bolts.

A friend with a 07 Heritage had the same thing happen after the dealer installed a crome pulley. The dealer told him the bolts that came with the pulley were junk chinese bolts. Why they didn't know this ahead of time makes ya think someone screwed up.
