I previously owned a 1986 and a 2005 FLHTC. I ride year round and daily. In the winter, it is below freezing when I leave for work on most days. I purchased a used set of lowers off of ebay which I put on in the colder season. Keeping the wind off of one's legs helps tremendously in staying warm. It's also keeps things much drier in the rain.
In August, I purchased a 2007 Ultra, which has the newer vented lowers. It seams like they let more wind through, even when 'closed'. I cannot 'hide' my feet up behind the bottoms of the lowers as well either. This past week, it rained a good deal. Water hits the vents, seeps past the edges and dribbles on my boots. So much for keeping my feet dry.
