Default Gas guage help

Since I purchased my RG I have had problems with the guage. At first the guage bounced all over the place once it came off full. The first thing the dealer did was to change the sending unit. This only made it so the full tank would show 3/8 tank and the bounce was still there. Then he put a new guage on and the bounce went away but the tank still only showed 3/8 tank and the fuel light came on at about 67-70 miles.
The next fix was another sending unit and this one shows a full tank but wont drop below 5/8 tank. Ran 190 miles and put in 4.4 gals of gas and still showed 5/8.

Question is is there any way to adjust the sending unit without bending the arm? Dealer is going to call HD for some help and I have the service manual on order.

Thanks
Byron

I don't pay attention to the fuel guage, none of the guages on the HDs I've owned have been accurate enough for me. I use the trip meter exclusively. I figure out my avg. mileage, then watch thedisplayon the trip meter. For my '05 EGC I usually start looking for a station at around 180 miles. It gets about 45 mpg avg.(if I keep my wrist out of the throttle).

Right on! The gas guage, low fuel warning light, the air temp guage on the UCs are all junk. go by the mileage. I usually get around 40 mpg on my UC. the guage and warning light are not only inaccurate, they arem't predicatable as to what they read and when.

NO... But if I was you... I would address this condition with HD Customer Service & get the HD REP involved in the correction...

But "gregm" is right - I have never has a HD fuel gauage (or any MC fuel gauage) that was accurate... Just normally fill-up between 180 - 190 miles and I always have fuel left...

I agree the temp and fuel gauges are useless, but the bouncing and weirdness you're seeing (Byron) is worse than most.

I dont bother with the gas gauge.

I know what I get for fuel mileage. When I start getting close to 3/4 of a gallon left, I get gas.

LOL. I agree with ya. Some guys get a lot better milage than I do. I get 39 mpg, exactly. I start looking for fuel around 130 miles on the trip meter, LOL. Just to err on the side of caution. I have a reserve tank, and have only had to use it a few times. Lucky for me, running out of gas is a pet peeve of mine. Even in the family vehicles. I almost never let the gauge get below a quarter of a tank. And when it gets on the red zone (a couple of times on vacation), I even panic, a bit. LOL

UPDATE: Finally got the gage working. The dealer pulled the sending unit and reinstalled it. He thinks that the float was hanging up on the inside of the tank. Ran to 151 miles on a tank and the light and the gage said find gas. Put 4.3 Gals in to it at 156. I took 4 trips to the shop and a lot of inconvenience but the dealer finally got it right and covered it under the extended warranty.
