I only have trouble getting it off. Squeezing the bars in when it's mounted is a pain. I came up with a workaround:

I use a wire-tie.
I put it loosely around the two bars that squeeze in.
When I'm ready to take it off, I just zip the wire tie which squeezes the bars in and pull it out.
Cut the wire tie off and start over.

Grab both sides of the detachable as low as you can towards the mounting base - squeez as hard as you can @ at the same time hit\slap down on one top edges as hard as you can... That's how I've done it in the past and had always worked for me

I installed the non-adjustable riders back rest on my '08 Ultra. It is tough to get back on because the '08 seat is a little thicker than my '06 Ultra seat was. I grab the bars on the detachable top part low and squeez with both hands. Then I use my chest to help push down until it locks into place. I have the base plate as far back as possible because I need a little extra room at 6'2". That setup makes it more fun to take off and reinstall
