Break-in: The book will tell you what NOT to do. It won't tell you what TO do. PhilM is right. You need to set those piston rings. You can follow PhilM's procedure while still staying in the recommendation of the owner's manual. The key is to put the engine under good load while staying away from high RPM and constant speed (highway) and 6th gear (highway). One add to what PhilM says: do that 10 times, but let the bike cool down once in the middle. Maybe ride it home relatively easy, doing the mid-range acceleration a couple times. Let the bike cool. Do the acceleration deal about 5 more times, let the bike cool. Then do it 5 more times, don't bother with the cool, and ride it basically however you want from then out. Avoid high RPM for a while, but that wasn't an issue for me because I lug mine around all the time anyway as my normal riding style.

I just purchased my 1st HD recently too; I've already added 4K in extra's and have a long list still. One thing I strongly recommend from personal experience is to slow down. Think about what you want and prioritize. If I could do it over I would spend a few weeks reading here and then go to the HD web site and start a wish list, print it out and make a plan from that. Some things you add today may not work with future mods. Good luck and have fun!
