Default Derby cover bolts

I know this is a topic that has been posted on before. This past weekend I did the 5K service on my putt. Got all but one of the star screws out of the derby cover. I know that you don't have to change the primary fluid at 5K, but at the 1K service there was a bit of metal on the drain plug and I wanted to be sure there was no problem. Worth the $8 in oil for personal knowledge to me. Anyway one of the bolts seized. Had to drill it out and use a hammer and easyout to get the thing out. Went to a local hardware store and purchased new stainless hex heads to replace them. If you are getting near a service interval that requires changing the primary fluid I suggest you go ahead and pick up new hardware and replace them.

Interesting you post this. I was putting on a new derby cover and ran into a problem getting the No. 1 screw out. The others were a piece of cake. I put the screws back in, took it to the dealer, and said, "You guys get this out. The others came out easy, but this one acts like it wants to strip." They asked me what I was doing and I told them I was putting on a new derby cover. They took that and the bike, put the new derby cover on and sent me merrily on my way--no charge.

I had the exact same thing happen to me when I changed my Derby cover.
