Bike on jiffy drains almost every drop, add one qt, bingo. Manual might say straight up but mor old oil will stay in the bottom. Jiffy makes the primary lean towards the drain hole and its easier.

With the bike on its stand or upright I guess you should just refill it to the level it was at in one of those positions, assuming that it was not leaking, I would check to see how many oz. are called for by service manual, at least you'll have an idea.

My other bikes always required a Qt. and a few oz. more to bring just up into the clutch basket.

pg 151 of the owners manual:

When checking the chaincase lubricant, motorcycle should be standing straight up, not leaning on the jiffy stand. Keep motorcycle upright for a short period of time to equalize lubricant level in the chaincase compartment.
remember, it takes 38 oz (wet) or 45 oz (dry) to refill.

masterblaster, the OP is asking how to check the oil level, not how to drain it. You are incorrect in your answers to his question. The bike has to be level to properly check the level of oil.

Rahall, there's kind of a joke around here about questions being asked when the answers are in the owners manual. Like, what tire pressure should I run, how do I break in my motor (asked after it's too late to do it properly!), what's the accessory switch do, where do I find the warranty, what is done at a 1000 miles service, etc etc.

However, your question is interesting in the fact that you are looking at a service manual. I've got an '06 service manual that has exactly the same directions as my '06 owner's manual, with the exception of what the answer to your question is. The owner's manual mentions it no less thanfour times in the directions, and the service manual doesn't mention it at all !

Yep, exactly whatI was saying......The service manual is written for shop personel who usually place the bike on a lift for EVERYTHING.......Therefore there would be a warning inthe SERVICE manual if the bike had to be on jiffy stand vice lift.

Does the Ultra (07) need to be level when you check the primary oil?

It does not say keep it level or place it on the stand in my service manual.

And, if anyone wants to comment on how to tell if the level is correct, that would be appreciated.

It's just not clear in the manual to me.

Thanks.
Rahall: Check the primary oil level with the bikeupright. It is not the easiest level to check. After draining, I add 38 ounces (1124 ml).

Thanks for the help.

I guess I have neglected the Owners Manual since I purchased the Service Manual.

It is diffently upright according to the owners manual.

The picture in the Service Manual that depicts the correct fluid level made since when I put it upright.

By the way, one quart (32 oz.) did not get the fluid up to the level shown in manual.

It took almost exactly the 38 oz. indicated in the Sevice Manual.

I stand corrected, I will still drain and fill the bike on the jiffy stand. With 38 oz. Suggest reading the manual as everyone else already has.
