Default Redesigned rider backrest?

Has anyone ever had their backrest pad rebuilt so it isn't so thick? I've been going round and round trying to make sure my 08 UC is ready for some long trips next summer. The problem I have is that with the drivers backrest on riding 2-up both the wife and I are uncomfortable. Without the backrest we are both very comfortable at least for shorter rides, but I strongly suspect any long trips will result in a backache for me as I have become too used to having good lower back support. I strongly suspect that if I got the Anderson relocation kit and moved the tour pack back a little one of us would be comfortable, but 1 or 2 inches wouldn't be enough to make both of us comfortable (I don't think). However, if the backrest pad could be rebuild and made thinner (more like the Mustang backrest) I might be able to find a combination that makes longer trips much more comfortable for both of us. I really like the way the HD backrests adjust and can be adjusted on the fly, most other adjustable backrests require you to do the adjustment before you get on the bike or at least before you start moving. Just thought I would see if anyone has tried this and how it worked out.

I ran into the same problem. I have the back rest with the remote. With my wife there are 2 issues, one the thickness and the second is the back rest goes too far down to the seat; no gap at the bottom. My wifes legs rub the br there. I have to remove the br and just lean against her. If you find a solution let me know.

I modified mine myself, nothing to it. Just pull the staples out, pull off leather. Then I used a electric knife
and trimmed off 2". Put leather back on, re-staplefolding in the now extra leather in the back.

My solution was buy a differant back rest for a 07 Electra Glide Classic.- - Screamin' Eagle Electra Glide Rider Backrest Kit

Styled to match the '04 Screamin' EagleÂŽ Electra GlideÂŽ Low-Profile Seat, this backrest features an adjustable support bracket with four mounting hole locations to accommodate different riding positions. Backrest can be quickly removed for storage in Tour-PakÂŽ or saddlebag. Thin profile allows additional passenger space - - HD part number 52695-04. Solved problem for me. (Was using a Comfort Stitch Adjustable Rider Backrest HD part number 52622-03A - - didn't give my wife enough room - we have been happy with the SE back rest)

We had the same problem, adjustable backrest was too wide, rubing my wifes thighs and not enough seat room for my wife. I bought the George Anderson relocator kit (great product) and moved the Tour-Pak back 2-1/2". Then removed the backrest cover and cut about 1-1/4" off the width of both sides of the backrest. It's now 9" wide but more than enough support for me. I made a new leather cover and with the overall width reduced and the backrest in the highest position, it works very well for both of us.
