Default IDS ???

Excuse my ignorance on this topic. If the IDS absorbs the shock or lugging so the rider doesn't feel it. This then encourages the rider to ride at lower rpms in 6th gear because the rider feels everything is smooth. My question is, isn't there still potential damage being done to engine and tranmission by lugging? It just feels smooth. Seems this could mask a problem.

I am just trying to understand this before I take my bike in and spend more money on IDS. I currently just don't use 6th until I am going between 70 and closer to 75. I have been a happy camper and really just found out about this thing called IDS and stock on 08 Touring bikes.

So if I bite the bullet do I have a problem getting IDS for a 07 Road King Classic with steel spoke wheels?

thanks,
Rick

I still only use 6th gear as an over 60-65mph gear. You still don't want to lug the engine. IDS has smoothed out the whole bike at all speeds in all gears. I was a happy enough camper but it still made a huge difference. SEARCH and you will find tons of posts on this.

You won't be sorry for spending the money on IDS. It is the best upgrade I've made to my bike. I would suggest that you spend some time getting a good "feel" of your bike right now at all RPM ranges and speeds. That way you can also sing the praises of the IDS. All I can say is SMOOOOOTH!

I have an '07 ultra but I haven't really been reading on the forums here much in the past six months. A few weeks ago when I returned, I noticed alot of "IDS" threads that explained how IDS would fix the issues that I have been having. The only problem is that until I started reading the IDS threads I didn't know (and I'm still not sure) that I actually *had* a problem.

But I may go ahead an have one installed in any event. The labor is free and the $300 part cost would put me right at what I need for the cool Christmas collectors set of little cast metal Harleys and display case for my office.

I have an 07 roadking classic and had the IDS installed. IDS doesn't work with 80 spoke wheels. RKC comes standard with 40 spoke wheels.I got the IDS to quiet down the 5th gear rattle which it did quite nicely and reduce vibration which it did a little. IDS is not a fix for lugging your engine. If you don't know how to ride a bike without lugging the engine you should seek help from an experienced rider to help you. IDS does not encourage to ride at lower rpm's. You would ride your bike the same way as you did before installing the IDS. You will just not hear the rattle in 5th gear and feel a little less vibration.

I didn't install it to fix any problems, I just wanted it as smooth as I could get it since I drive 40+ miles to work each day one way. And like some of you I didn't notice any of the issues others have with their 07's until I read them here. And even then it took effort to even detect them. But the IDS does make a substantial difference in the way it feels and at $217 self installed it was well worth the $$$. Slip-ons I think are next, if I can make up my mind.

I have an '08 Ultra... the IDS comes stock on them. I can tell you the bike is about as smooth as any I have ever been on. If the IDS were an "option" for the '08's, I'd still spend the money. Worth every penny based on what I've read here and from what '07 touring bike owners have told me personally.

Go for it!

Just cause u have the IDS doesnt mean ull lug the bike..
The 07's didnt have it. HD realized the 07 were lacking something in the drivetrain. The 08's + up have them. The MOCO didnt put on the IDS on for no reason. Just get the IDS installed. Ull see..
