Open the inspection cover. Look at the shoe, and check the chain tightness with the manual specs. Don't need to drain the fluid, but do make sure the gasket is in good shape, or replace it when putting the cover back on.

I just changed mine and went to gear drive...My outer shoe I.E. tensioner was worn beyond acceptable limits according to my service manual...And my inner was getting there at 25,000 miles and I have used nothing but Amsoil in it with regular oil changes.....Jer

If you're referring to the cam chain tensioners, there is no inspection cover as previously stated. If your mileage is 30K or greater, you might as well check and replace them while you're in there. It's not a huge job if you're not afraid to pull your exhaust system.

The outer tensioner looks easy to get at but do you have to remove the cam plate to get to the inner secondary tensioner? I haven't been in there yet but with 33k on an 02 I think it is time. Another Q: would these be covered under the extended Harley warranty program?

I think Toby is talking about his camchain tensioners
and not the primary chain, so there is no fluid and no inspection cover

The HD Extended Service Plan covered the replacement of my cam chain tensioners earlier this year.

I had no noise or other indication of a problem, though with 40+K miles I pulled the cover and saw clearly excessive wear.

I have heard of guys cutting open the oil filter and spotting fleks of orange plastic from the tensioner pad material.

Thanks, I did mean cam chain tensioners. Mine has 63782 miles and had the 95 CI kit put in at 25000 miles. So probablly time. Think I will replace with tensioners this time & at 100000 miles I am thinking of going to a 110 or 103. Other options are open also.

why not go with S&S gear set up and be done with ever checking them again. the chain set up HD used is the weakest link in the whole twin cam motor. plus you should pick up a few extra ponies with the gear set up too
