Today, after I pulled the primary cover off and took the clutches out, I turned thetransmission mainshaft and the clutch basket had a very distinct wobble to it, it even caused the primary chain to wobble. The pinion and clutch basket are all tight. Could the wobble be caused by a bad bearing?? I hope I am describing this right, as I rotated the trans. mainshaft, the clutch basket (without clutches) movedas if it was warped (the clutch basket isn't turning). Can anyone tell me if this is normal or not? I wouldn't think it would be a good thing and may be why my seal is leaking?? I really appreciate any ideas or advice, thanks!
Sounds like the mainshaftcould bebent. The first thing to do is remove the clutch basket and get a dial indicator and check the runout of the mainshaft.
Thanks for the info Kasper. The mainshaft doesn't seem to be bent as it turns freely and true but I will have it checked once I get everything apart. (The clutch basket 'wobbles' about 1/8 th inch). Hopefully, someone else may chime in with more detail.
an 1/8th of an inch is something i would worry about. is it possible the basket was seated wrong on the shaft? is there any play in the shaft, up down, left right to indicate a bearing being bad? could be a poor machining on the basket? dont let it go, there has got to be a prob somewhere. did you you check the shaft with a dial indicator as suggested? if you dont have one, i've made crude ones, use a wire hanger or similiar gauge of wire, rig it somehow so it is just about touching the shaft, or basket, tape it to something, anything, just make it stay where you want it, then rotate the shaft, you can use cheap feeler gauges to check the gap, then rotate the shaft a 1/4 turn at a time (easier with spark plugs out) and keep checking that gap. its crude, but can get you looking in the right place. make sure you check the shaft in different places, like close to the case, middle of shaft and end. keep record of your findings, and please keep us posted on the outcome so it may help others.
I haven't taken it all down yet. I just wanted to get a jump on it as I plan on doing the seals replacement over the next few weeks. Thank goodness I have the luxury of time now that winter has set in here in Iowa. And I will check all the points you guys suggest. I can get my hands on a dial indicator as we have a store with a machine shop.
The bike has about 58K miles on it and other than a stator replacement, the primary has never been off so I can only imagine it's a bearing gone bad and not been doing this for long. My seal started leaking a couple of months ago so I am leaning towards the bearing being bad as the cause of it. Thanks for the tips everyone, it sure helps to know what others have run into ....or not!
