Just because it's legal, doesn't mean it's safe!
15 mph in this case apparently wasn't a safe speed.
You always have that one person who would be willing to do
what she did or worse.
Lane splitting is not legal here or colorado, but they still do it.
2 years ago Wyoming made it legal for bikers to ride 2 abreast in one lane.
Again it may be legal, but not always safe.
The 5 stitches was a wake up call of being too complacent in the saddle.
Glad to hear that's all it was.
Doubt the frame is bent, but if it is a good winter project would be a replacement. New ones are about 2K depending on the dealer + their labor or yours.
The engine guard is designed to absorb the dynamics of a crash to protect the frame.

Glad you're OK. I would have been very pissed too. Maybe too pissed.....
I was visiting my Sister in San Diego last year. While there, I had to go the the HD dealer for a oil change andsitting in traffic I saw several bikes splitting lanes. Well I thought "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" so I very cautiously started lane splitting...cars would pull over and give me a little more room...I though "Man, this is very nice of these people" then it dawned on me....I was riding my 06 Pearl White UC and they must have thought I was the police.....would have loved to see their expressions when they saw the KY license plates.....

Be safe all.....

Those lanes must be HUGE or I'm just to much a ninny. I can't imagine splitting lanes with my UC. Now in my younger Ninja 600 days, yeah, but not with my bagger.

Nope, not legal in NJ and wouldn't do it if it was. Your an example as to why.

Similar thing happened to me. Riding the 134 through Thousand Oaks, car moved over so I couldn't continue. I side swiped an Acura in the next lane. Cost me $2600.00 to repair it, but I wasn't injured. Thankfully mine only cost me money to learn the downside of lane splitting...

I ride the same roads in San Diego. If lane-splitting was not lawful, there'd be little point in taking the bike to work. The lanes (especially freeway lanes and we have a dozen freeways in the city) are enormously wide, with a couple of exceptions. Reasonable speeds keep these accidents to walk-aways. On sportbikes, well, "They Were Expendable".

I have read many thread on lane splitting. Do you guys think the general public riders (cagers) are aware it is legal to do so. I know how pissed people get when cars try to pass on the right(emergnecy lanes, etc..). Most driver do not know the rules for us bikers.
