I bought a Magelllan Explorist primarily for hiking and recently mounted it on the scoot. It's water resistant (not waterproof) but I haven't had any problems using it in the rain.
Megellan doesn't sell a decent bike mount so I went with an after market Ram Mount ( http://www.ram-mount.com ) The mount is high quality with a lot of adjustability and can be removed easily for safe keeping or to get the gps out of the weather.
If I ever replace the gps, I think I would go with Garmin instead of another Magellan only because Garmin is the industry leader and more popular (easier to get accessories and support, etc.)
I have to go along with the 2610 also. It is discontinued, but still out there for the $200 price range. I have had mine about a year, and it was discontinued when I got it, they had already moved up to the 2800 series. Mine is waterproof, has so far proven to be a good unit. I leave it on my bike all the time unless I am going somewhere in another vehicle and need it there. Don't know how I made it all these years without one.
I appreciate the help. Zumo's are great, but pricey. I'm not sure I would get enough use to justify the price. Bluetooth, phone, h*ll I can't even program my cell phone.
P C Nation has the Zumo 550 for 627.00 I bought one and love it. However, I don't use the bluetooth on my Ultra Classic, so I probably could have used the Zumo 450 and saved a little money. The waterproof part is a must on a motorcycle. Bldr
I think you will use that GPS more than you think.and once you figure out how to use it, you will never be without one again. If mine broke today i would order a new one today. I have the garmin 2610 and it is buy far the best money i have spent on any gaget. When i up grade i will get the one with the MP3.
Itoo have been looking at GPS for my bike and cars and was wondering if there were any other forum membersthat uses non waterproof gps on their bikes? Staples has a Tomtom one 3rd edition unit for 127 dollars on black friday sales. I was also wondering about the baggie and rubber band trick or just stoping and throw it in the saddlebags or trunk while getting out my rainsuit. Fred S.
I bought the wife a garmin 2730 with xm, the zumo wasnt out yet. For the price your going to pay for the garmin 2600 or 2700 series plus mounts, its almost comparable to go with the zumo 550, and zumo is a way beter GPS, easier for future upgrades
You can buy a refurb'ed Garmin Quest off of eBay for less that $200 and have it shipped directly from Garmin. It's waterproof and comes with the same one-year manufactuers warranty as a brand new one. Like sugarbear said, I just pop it off the handlebar mount (a $20 accessory from Garmin) and use it in my truck too.
