I can't help you with how to get AVC to work when you aren't using HD's radio. Biketronics has a module that allows aftermarket radios to be used with HD's wiring and have AVC; they've patented whatever it is they do.
Give BT a call and see if they'll tell you if you can get AVC w/o HD's wiring. They're familiar with the police model wiring and sell (or used to sell) a handlebar switch kit for cop bikes.
I had a Sony radio w/o handlebar controls for a while before adding the civilian handlebar switches and the BT module for handlebar control of the radio. For me, having the handlebar switches was a nice safety improvement because I no longer had to look for the button on the radio (to change volume; change mode; etc.) and take my hand off the handlebar grip to push a button.
just came across this post and need help i am putting my 06 street glide back together and need a front wire harness. i found a FLHTPI harness online which is an electra glide police bike. i checked with harley and this harness and the regular street glide harness are different part numbers. so my question is will this police bike harness work with my street glide or will it need to be modified or just not really work at all? i have an aftermarket cd deck that was in the bike before dismantling for powder coat so whatever harness works for a 06 street glide should work with the deck as well.
