A friend has an '07 Ultra. He began having trouble with engine performance. He thought it might be FI related. After taking the bike to the dealer, and having the techs go through the bike, they found that the fly wheel had seperated into two seperate pieces. It was a circular seperation around the diameter of the fly wheel. The MoCo replaced the damaged motor with a new one. Someone in the service dept. commented that this had happened to several '07s. Anyone else ever hear of this?
Haven't heard of it happening to any Harleys, but glad you mentioned it....Please see if you can get manufacture date on his bike. Mine is an '07.
Laminations occur when steel is hot rolled into plate from ingots....The ingots sometimes contain gas bubbles, and the bubbles then end up squashed out into large thin areas that cause the layer-like laminations in the finished plate. The laminations can be detected in the plate, but usually not visually.
The same effect can occur if the flywheel steel is clad with another alloy, but it's not due to gas bubbles, simply poor cladding.
I doubt Harley flywheels are clad.
Sounds like Harley needs to review it's manufacturing records to see how many flywheels were manufactured from that particular plate batch.
I'll check as to date of manufacture. I do know that he traded an '06 Ultra for the '07 soon after the '07s arrived at the dealer. Regardless, he now has a new motor in his '07.
