A friend of mine is on his second police bike. He seems to really like them. They normally have a beefed up charging system to handle the extra current draw and different transmission pully to give more low end torque for a fast take off. The downside as stated above is the cost of setting them up. You will most likley want rear foot boards and a two up seat for starters. After that the luggage rack and back rest is like buying any new bike.
I was looking at one for myself but after considering the extra expenses and a paint job I wasn't crazy about I decided on my RK which only had 16k but all the accesories I could want for only about 1500 more that the police bike.
Just my two cents.
Mack makes a good point about the maintenance done on a cop bike, I might add thatyou take a bigger risk with aused civilian bike in regard to the maintenance history. thefixer has a fine example ofone of the 2-tone paint schemesthat IMO look better than the civvy models The black & whitepaint+ around $2K less than a comparableused civilian model was enough reasonsfor me to get a police bike. Besides, all the stuff that I added or changed on my RK Police would have been doneif it was a civilian bike.
I just bought an 06 RK Police bike with 4000 miles, and could not be happier.Saved me about 5000 off the price of a new one, plus I was able to get the birch white that I wanted. To me it was hard to justify buying a new bike and then start to do mods. Love the White... also Love Vanilla ice cream
Mine is a 04' police electraglide, bought it in 05' after being in service for one season,6,250 miles on it,it came with a brand new two-up pillow look seat,2 new two-up tires and 1 year left on the factory warrantee. I've basically turned mine into a ultra as well, This is my first harley,i bought what i could afford to be able to have one,if i had held out for a new electraglide i would have spent more $$$ for the bike, and the same $$$$ on turning it into what it is now. pleased with mine, and sure i had a few problems, which were all taken care of under the remaining factory warrantee. very happy with my police bike, would buy another as well. my paint doesnt have any marks or scratches either, looked like new whenbought it. I also disagree with mack about the condition of these bikes, sure i'm guessing some are worn looking ,but many are very nice condition
The selection and condition of returned police bikes would vary depending on where you are looking. Last Saturday the local dealership had a spotless black and white RK with a whopping 600 miles on it. It was a great looking ride. The gal I bought my bike from told me that last year she got one back in from a small town agency that had 200 miles on it. Not 20,000 or 2,000......200 miles. Our local dealership puts a lot of police bikes in small agencies and we normally have a 6 or 7 month window to ride. That combination makes for some very low mileage, slightly used, clean returns.
A buddy of mine has a 2001 which has been converted to a trike. When you pull the seat pin and raise the seat how do you remove the plactic shield located under the seat?
I bought a '04 Police bike after being disapointed with an '07 Ultra Classic. I know it's suppose to be the top bike. Well the '07 didn't feel right, I just couldn't "like" it. Bought it for the wifie because she liked all the bling bling on it. When we went on the first 100mile ride I noticedthree issues with that bike. The starter clang, the 5th gear noise that sounded like a box of rocks, and the excessive heat coming up at a stop. And this was in November, I couldn't imagine the amount of heat coming up in July! Took the '07 back to the dealer and was told all those issues were normal, the bike is fine, those are all known issues. Confirmed all this on the internet and with guys at work. I was a little pissed after spending 20K and was basically told it is what it is. So I traded it in on an '04 Police Bike. No starter clang, all 5 gears run solid and quiet, and after coming offthe highway I can stand sitting over at a stop sign. I told the dealer looks like all the issues are fixed. So for now that's my bagger.Got the touring seat for 2up riding with just a back rest for now and will get it painted.
Had a question for those who already have police bikes. I was told by the dealer the tour pack would not work because of the way the lidsopen on the stock police saddle bags. But I noticed some of you have the tour pack with the stock saddle bags. Did you have to modify anything or get a special mounting?
My red 02 in my sig is a police Road King and the 04 that I just traded was as well. I had excellent luck with them and would not be afraid of another.
Tusome - first of all, welcome to the forum. Second, the police style bags will not work with a hard king or chopped tour pak, but I think they will work with a leather 'pak since the leather ones are not as wide.
