Default Question on Police bikes

Hi all, I was hanging out ata local dealer today and they had two EG police bikes. I was having a casual discussion with a member of the sales staff and he noted that anyone can purchase a police bike. Note that these were the standard police use bikes, not the Peace Officer models (I know that those are reserved for active and retired LEOs). Anyway, it made me wonderhow can they sell a police bike decked out with siren,blue/redpursuit lights, and clearly marked "Police" to just anyone off the street. Sounds like an easy way for folks with low morals to impersonate LEOs.Do they typically disable the police features when sold to a civilian?

On a related note, they seemed like very nice bikes...especially given that the 103 ci motor and ABS is standard. If I was in the market for a new bike I'd probably consider one given what you get for the price.

Before you buy a used police bike, check carefully to see how much it is going to cost to set it up for the use you have in mind. I wanted one for two-up touring, but decided a new EG Standard would be the better value.

The Majority of dealers that lease police bikes to departments, remove the red/blue pursuit lights, the siren and the flashing pole light on the back.

We are presently on our third ex-police bike and have had no issues on any of the bikes.

We have found the ex-police bikes as good values.

Good Luck

The Motor Company will allow a dealer to sell a police bike "to anyone" only after they've had the bike for a minimum of six months and certify that they were unable to find a police department buyer for it. As already stated, they're required to remove the emergency lights, flasher unit, siren and amp, etc before selling it to a private individual. They are usually GREAT deals. A big plus with the '07+ police bikes is that they come standard with the 103 cid motor.

They must also change the run flat tires as they are designed for only one rider. You couldnt give me a used one. They are work bikes and rode hard. Most do not look to good as officers dont have time to care for them from a looks point of view. Maintenance is always done correctly and on time.

As always, YMMV, but I got a great bike with under 1800 (yes hundred) miles on it. It was virtually new and I was fortunate to meet the police officer that was issued the bike. I am also a friend of the motor officer that provides a lot of training to his fellow officers on the Harleys.
You will spend money on it to "customize" it to your likeing, but you will do the same on any other bike.
This is my first Harley and I really enjoy this bike. I have only put about 4500 additional miles on it, but I hope to ride more.
Here is a pic.

Something to consider. The ABS unit on the police bikes (except for the new 08) takes a BIG chunk of the right saddle bag. I just took a motor officers training class and was surprised at how large the unit was and how much room it takes. The new unit is now intergrated with the ECM. Not that any of these issues should make you pass up a good deal. Good luck.

I must completely disagree with MACK. I have a police EG that was / is in great condition. It was used by the Raleigh NC PD for 10000 miles. I have ALL the service records. These bikes are leases so if anything goes foul then it is replaced/repaired almost immediately. LEOs are not going to ride or depend on crappy vehicles bike or auto.
Also, mine still had the run flat tires on it when i got it...not to my knowledge. On my first tire replacement I told the dealer to put the same tire back on. After removing the tire then noticed it was a run flat...which cost about double of a regualr tire. Needless to say i put on a regular dunlop.
Additionally, i have "converted" my Poilce EG to an ultra and am 100% satisfied and would definately purchase another leased PD bike. Especially in a couple years once they are off lease...especially with a 103 engine.

here is a pic of my converted PD bike.
