I am considering swapping out my stock handlebars for Touring Pull Back Hanlebars (55914-98). The item description says that it requires separate purchase of Clutch Cable P/N 38649-98. This is the same part number that is listed in the touring model parts catalog which should go with my stock bars. I am guessing that I don't need to change this cable out because I already have it?
Secondly, it requires separate purchase of Brake line Kit P/N 45212-97B. Now this is not listed in the touring parts catalog which I take as meaning that I DO have to swap the brake line out too because my stock line may be too short.
Third, it requires separate purchase of Model-Specific Throttle/Idle Cables. Does this mean that my stock cables won't work with the new bars because they are too short?

I think if you look at the 38649-98 in the parts book you will see that it is for a side car model and is 3" longer. I don't believe it is a stock cable as I have purchased the -98 for my 04 and the -08 for my 08 when I changed out bars. You may be able to get by with bending the brake line a little and not having to change it out, as I did on both of my bar swaps. You can change out the throttle/idle cables and it won't affect your cruise as you will have to get cables that include the roll-off switch. I can grab you the part numbers of the throttle/idle cables that you will need tomorrow when I work at HD as they would be the same ones that I had purchased for my 04. Have you felt the pullback bars? I only ask because they turn your wrists in a bit and you may not like them.
Also Jim when you change out the clutch cable get a couple of 2x lumber and ride each wheel of the scoot up onto them. Then lean the bike way over to the left on the jiffy stand. It looks/feels like it will go over but it won't. This will allow you to take off the tranny side cover without having to drop the tranny fluid because all of the fluid will be to the left of the tranny. Also don't forget exhaust gaskets as you will have to drop that to get to the tranny cover. I also figg'rd out a way to install the throttle/idle cables without having to lift the tank or even remove the fairing cap, but you'll have to remove the cap anyway for the clutch cable. If ya need anything else, give a holler.
I knew that you would chime in on this. No, I haven't tried the HD bars, just started thinking about doing the mod. I remember your post about the bars you swapped out on the 04 and was hoping I could catch up with you and maybe get a real hands on feel for the bars, but then you traded up and my chance was gone. I am not going to jump in head first on this, just doing a bit of research.
Yeah, I did see the footnote along side the clutch cable description in the parts book about the side car but didn't pay attention to the cable assembly # just above it which must be the stock cable. Toldja I was confused.
I used the wild 1's on my UC. They eliminated the soreness in my upper back on long rides, also gave me alot more control due to the wider, taller position. They did take a little getting use to. Now stock bars feel funny to me.
You don't have to swap them out, I changed them out on my wifes bike, bought the extra brake and throtle lines only to figgure out I didnt need them, Thank god harley took them back

I just had the pullbacks installed on my '07 Ultra. Before getting into the particulars of what MIGHT be needed to complete the switch, I caution you to sit on a bike that has the pullback bars installed. They do comeback about two inches; I regretably think the stock bars were more comfortable for me. It changes the turning radius for me - meaning that my elbows are much closer to my body which makes the turning manuver different. I'm not sure it was the right move for me.
The dealer did the install. They removed the front stock brake line and replaced with P/N 43350-96B; they also install a clutch cable assembly P/N 38649-07. Since I didn't do the work, I am not sure about the logistics of the parts swap.
i switched from stock to wild 1 chubby 518's on my road king classic. the instructions said that you "could" keep the clutch and the brake. they also said if you changed them go to plus 4"..........see what im getting at ? being stubborn i did the whole switch with the stock cables and hose it worked but the lay of the cables was awkward and ugly. after about ten minutes i took all the stock stuff off and ordered coated stainless steel in plus 4" for everything. the improvement was worth every penny. combining the internal wiring and the clean look of well routed stainless made the whole job well worth it. dont under estimate the value of getting rid of the black metal tube to rubber hose on the clutch. replacing that with a sweeping ss jacketed hose is a huge upgrade. i never noticed how crappy the old set up looked ...until i got rid of it...much nicer.
I put these on my 07 and found that I did not like the position of the bars. I quickly went back stock. Recently I went with the kromeworks sweepers and found these to be much better. I did not change any cables on either swap. I did have to reroute the clutch cable inside the fairing to free up some slack.
