I have a 99 electra glide with the magnetti marelli efi and what to add aftermarket exhaust then down the road modify engine for more horsepower which is the best fuel management system? I have been advised that if I'm going to do mods to engine I should go with the thundermax conversion kit for magnetti marelli to get the most out of my 99?? Is there an as good system at a lower price?
How big do you plan on going? The M&M with a Power Commander will handle a nice mild motor. If your looking to have a horsepower king than there are better options than putting any money into the M&M.
Ditto on the PCIII. It will handle your needs for just about anything you do to a MM system up through a 95" motor. If you go big (stroker) then you should look a system matched to the build.
The biggest limitation to the M&M is the stock 38mm TB. Once you get to 100" or more, it just does not flow enough air to feed the engine. As is evidenced by the SE bikes, the stock TB is good up to 95/96" engines. As long as you don't build too big, you will be okay with a PCIIIr or SERT for M&M.
Having said all that, I am one of those unlucky SOBs that had nothing but problems with my M&M system. I did the PC and SERTs and finally went with the Zippers Kit with closed loop. But if you are not having problems by now, you should be okay. The convienent thing about the T-Max with auto-tune is that itallows you to change components, like pipes, mufflers, cams, and suchwithout getting another dyno tune.
use the SERT and go with better heads and intake manifold.
I'm not recommending HD parts as I don't feel one should have to go that route.
But the SERT is still the best for the price.
You don't have to have a dyno done but it helps.
Plus with laptop you can track changes and read the data output as time goes on.
Add some cams and you're running
As others have said before, the stock MM unit will be fine for mild builds. I had one on my '99 RKC. The build was:
KB Flat tops
BC Gerolamy TC1A heads
S&S 510G cams
Bassani Power Curve w/ touring mufflers
PCIII
It dynoed out at mid 80's hp and mid 90's tq. Very similar to Puzzled.
One good mod you can do is use the BC Gerolamy bored M&M Throttle body. It's pretty reasonable for price and I have heard good things about it. As far as tuner goes, I would recommend either a PCIII or SERT depending on what your tuner is most experienced with. Remember, that there is a big difference in being listed as a PC Authorized tuner and being an expert PC tuner. Same goes for SERT.
