When I bought the bike, the dealer put a SE air cleaner, Stage 1 map, and SE slip on pipes. I then added a Power Commander USB III because I was getting some decel pop and it bothered me. I added fuel in the low range and corrected that problem. But did I?.......
That's Why am I NOT comfortable?
Because the SE slip-ons are not on the PCIII list, and the dealer does NOT have a dyno to truly calibrate the mixture. Nor does anyone within striking distance of my home.
I really have no way of knowing if my bike is running right.
Also took a good look the Power Commander download maps.
Here's another concern. SOme of those maps are so different, yet the setup that they're created for, are so similar, that I'm finding it hard to believe that there was any effort put into creating the correct maps.
For instance: The Thunder-cone slip-ons are practically identical to the SE stage 1 slip-ons, yet the map is SO much richer throughout the throttle range.
RE: Not comfortable with current performance level.
GO ONLINE AND LOOK FOR THE DYNO GUY. HE IS AN EXPERT TUNER AND HAS A PORTABLE DYNO THAT HE TRAVELS THE COUNTRY WITH. LOOK UP HIS SCHEDULE AND FIND OUT WHEN HE IS NEAR YOU.. OTHERWISE KEEP LOOKING FOR A DYNO. YOU NEED ONE TO GET THINGS RIGHT. THE RACE TUNER WOULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER CHOICE THAN THE PC BUT YOU ARE STUCK WITH IT NOW UNLESS YOU DONT MIND THROWING THYE DOUGH AWAY.
RE: Not comfortable with current performance level.
Anthony,
Call DynoJet and talk to them about your setup. They really know what they are doing. With the proper info they will be able to get you the right map. You still should have it Dyno'd as soon as possible to get top performance but you will be real close and you won't damage to motor.
RE: Not comfortable with current performance level.
I called DynoJet, and the rep made me use the V&H Oval Slip-ons and add +20 in the 0% column to eliminate the decel pop.
I called a second time, and the tech tells me it's OK to use the SE / SE Slip-ons map that matches my setup from the 2002 maps.
Both of those maps are so different, I can't imagine getting the same performance, and obviously I won't.
I then called and got a third tech on the phone (just out of curiosity), he tells me that I shouldn't bother putting a PCIII on my bike unless my mods matched one of their specific maps. He recommended that I get true duals, or simply choose a pre-tested map, OR upgrade my bike to match the map!
RE: Not comfortable with current performance level.
I have to agree with the other posts. I too have an '05 RK Classic running the PCIIIusb. For now I am using a map the most closely matches my setup. However, once spring rolls around, I will be getting to the dyno center to have it setup for optimal performance. Personally I think the pre-made maps are designed to be used as starting points and are programmed well enough so the bike is usable with the mods that are installed.
