A friend just discovered his Ultra laying up against his car this morning. Seems as when the bike fell over the handle bars and mirrors gouged into the car door pretty bad not only damaging his car but his Ultra's handlebar, mirror and foot rest... at least that's what he has found so far!
How did it happen?! Well the jiffy stand pin broke sometime during the weekend so gravity takes over.
His bike is a 95 Ultra with the original jiffy stand... so we concluded that after all the years of riding and washing, corrossion finaly got a hold on it.
The 800 pound bike is held up by just a 5/16 inch dia pin with a cotter key! Yes that's all! Many of us take for granted that when we are setting on the bike with the stand down that everything is secure! Guess we better think again!
Check out your jiffy stand just to be sure the road salts haven't weakened it... Could save you some grief in the future
Read a similar thread on another forum a couple months back. The difference was that bike was "bumped" by a cage (albeit not hard enough to do damage). In that case the bike didn't fall but the jiffy-stand had cracked to the point that it was literally hanging on by a thread.
Anyone else hear of a similar story? Should these be considered a consumable item after x number of years????
I had to replace the pin on my 99 Valkyrie Interstate last year... Years of up&down on the kickstand literally sheared the bolt right off... $2 fix, but it was a drag having to bungee the kickstand for a few days... I never saw any stress or cracks on the bolt... I saw an older Ultra last week with the bungee cord hooked to the kickstand also... I've had older bikes and never had any problems with the kickstand though... go figure...
A friend of mine dumped his Gold Wing (older model) on a PGR mission with the kickstand spring broke, and the stand came down. On one of my old Triumphs, the center brace on the center stand broke at the weld, and the bike dumped over to the right. Stuff happens....often not predictable.

Pin? theOEMJiffy Stands look just like todays...thejiffy stand is one piece and makes about a 90 degree bend...the upper portion is threaded and a square looking "Stop" is on top of that with a nut holding it on. The top of the jiffy stand is square and the opening in the "stop" is square..to prevent rotation. Once the "stop"slides in between the bracket on the frame and weight it placed on it....it is locked in. Did the Jiffy Stand itself break? Or could there be something besides an OEM one on the bike?
PS...Not to rub Salt into theWound...but jiffystand inspection and lubrication is part of the regular service interval.
There is a pin that runs through the upper part of the jiffy stand that actually holds the stand on the bike... the stand didn't break nor the mounting bracket that is welded to the bike.. The slide through pin just gave out.. It goes in from the bottom, through a bushing, then the lower part of the mounting bracket, then through the stand itself and back throught the upper part of the mounting bracket and into another bushing then a cotterkey is put in on the top.. The pin is about 2 and a half inches long..
I believe everone is aware of the locking action of the jiffy stand but this is not the issue in this case..
Most people ignor the stand till it's too late!!! If the bushings wear out before the pin gives way then you've got a floppy jiffy... and a floppy jiffy is not going to stay up the way it should... May need a helping hand or two..

-91A because the rubber bump stop was moved from the frame to being on the jiffy stand itself. The jiffy stand has not changed except for that.

You are probably right as I don't have the manual for his bike... I'm only refering to what he told me and what I know about some of Harley's jiffy stand connections. I ASSUMED that they were pretty much all alike... How stupid of me... to think of such... The larger heavy bikes such as the Ultra will probably never have a cheap pin holding on the jiffy stand...
So I can only then ASSUME untill told other wise by my friend that the connecting parts of which I don't know about failed somehow... at least he said the stand itself didn't break!
