Went deer hunting once in Wisconsin...I whistled all damn morning and afternoon..Didn't see a thing.....but then again, could have been the beer I had the night before.

Deer whistles...come on! You've been watching Billy Mays infomercials haven't you?! Spooked deer don't know whether to go left, right, up, down, or any other way. Whistles, loud pipes, cans tied to the rear, or whatever noisemaker you got ain't gonna make a stupid deer stay out of your path...the noises may only make it run...not in any specific direction...jeeees.

I think it attracts them
Interesting comment. The Mn DNR did a study a few years back, and pubished it in their monthly magazine, The Volunteer.

They actually had some bucks charge vehicles that had them on during the test. The conclusion was, Yes, the deer can hear them, and No, they do not repel them.

Deer, when startled, will run in whatever direction they are facing, which is often right into traffic. The deer that just ran across the road in front of you might have been startled by your buddy's loud pipes a mile away on the next section road.

I live by a stretch of road that has the highest deer kill in the midwest, along Hwy 23 in SW Mn. The state has tried numerous things, including infra sensors in the ditch, to warn drivers via flashing lights that the deer are moving (see attached pictures). Our riding group often rides this stretch of road, carefully and quietly going past deer grazing in the road ditch. We also make all the loud bikes ride at the rear of the pack.....

I love those deer crossing signs on the highways. Me and some buddies were heading to Myrtle Beach to do some fishing and a big doe crossed in front of us causing me to have to make a defensive maneuver to miss it. Whew...that was close. When we got to the beach I called my wife and told her about the incident and she says" there are deer crossing signs all along the road down there". I explained to her that the deer don't always cross at the signs! Bless her heart...she is a blonde though!
