Well, I saw a post recently asking about how hard it is to change the windscreen on a batwing fairing -- of course I answered, and stated that its easy out, easy in...only three screws! well, I did mine about 10 months ago --- funny thing......yesterday, I was cruzin at about 80 on highway 66 on my way home from work...and POP! One of the screws came out and pinged my helmet! I thought it was a rock at first...but during my post-ride cleaning -- I found out the screw was missing...
So...word to the wise and lessons learned from a non-wrench type of guy....., take a moment to check the tightness if you changed out your screen lately...It was my oversight by thinking that the scew was tight enough, guess it wasn't!
MAY HAVE BEEN SHERE COINCIDENCE. IT IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR A SCREW TO FALL OUT EVEN IF IT IS NOT TIGHT BECAUSE THE SCREW GOES INTO A BRASS INSERT. ALSO AT 80MPH THE SCREW WOULD FLY 2-3 FEET ABOVE THE WINDSCREEN OR CERTAINLY HIT THE SCREEN AND FALL AWAY.IT WAS PROBABLY A ROCK.
That's the first I've ever heard of that. I've had many batwing baggers and have never come across that problem. There isn't any pressure on the bolts so I'm wondering what caused it, other than just being too lose.
I have the shark nose fairing with the rubber inserts instead of a nut. You poke the insert into the front of the fairing and then attache the windshiel ot it with a bole with a screw head. These are a pain in the butt. The rubber inserts wear out after one or two uses and then spin in the fairing. I've seen them pop out before too. I've never had any problems with mine coming lose but I have had several of them strip out. I keep about 6 extras on hand at all times for when I change my screen.
What model and size is that wind screen? I like it.
Hey coolharley - -THANKS.. it is an 8 inch dark smoked screen I got from an EBAYER - -24 bucks delivered...looks and acts just like the HD part, just not as expensive - -the quality is not as nice as the HD, but by looks it hard to tell -- besides, it works like any other...
just type in FLHT on ebay, and most likely you'll find the screens...
well, here is a link I found - - I bought mine back in January 05 I think, so obviously the prices went up a little - -but hey, not near the HD price!!! below is a link to the same guy I bought mine from - - I highly recommend this seller, as I gave a positive feedback to him last January
SURE MUST HAVE BEEN! I don't recall a car being too close when it happened, but then again, weird and unpredictable things can happen while riding...and besides the point, whatever it was that popped my helmet made me happy to have been wearing it!
FYI.. Harley now makes a new brass insert that has screw threads on the outside. This makes it a little harder to over tighten and pop the insert loose....
One of my winter to-do's is to fix the mess I made of mine - I have an 05 glide and my internal idiot over tightend two of the brass inserts and they have popped out - Got a date with JB Weld in the upcoming days! - It bothers me so much I may go for a new inner fairing if I can't get the JB Weld to work - DOH!
Get the newer inserts from the dealer...No need to glue them in.....

I'm going to be changing my windshield soon.
What type of inserts are you referring to? Is it like the RIVNUT inserts?
Probably would be wise to pick up some spares at the dealership just to be on the safe side.
Is there a special tool required to install them?
