I'm going to be changing my windshield soon.
What type of inserts are you referring to? Is it like the RIVNUT inserts?
Probably would be wise to pick up some spares at the dealership just to be on the safe side.
Is there a special tool required to install them?
Mickey,

I wish I had a part number for you. The new style has thread grips on the outside instead of the burrs. I had the fairings bags installed when I bought the bike . I guess the wrench who put it on over tightened the screws and they popped loose in about a week. So here I go and get ready To pitch a b!t(h and they jumped right on it and put the new style in.

The parts guy should know what you want. I just don't understand why the MOCO still puts the old ones in the 06 models. Probably to squeeze a few more bucks out of you when they fail....

Anyhow they pop right in place and tighten when you twist the windshield screw...

Update - The part number for the inserts is #16585-96 - Picked up a couple today and they work like a charm - You simply put the screw in all the way on the new insert and then screw the entire unit in the hole - It's just the right amount oversize and just like Gunny mentioned the threads are on the outside so it grips up nice - Makes a a real crappy design a little less crappy! - Thanks again Gunny for the tip
