Default Fairing Screw Question

When I removed the fairing and re-installed it last night, I ran into a curious thing with the 4 lower screws. When I put the lower 4 screws in I was extremely careful to make sure they weren't cross-threaded. They went in easily about half way and then, got difficult to turn. It almost felt like they were cross-threaded. Anyway, I backed them out and checked the threads and they looked fine. So, I went on and tightened them down.

Today, I was telling my next-door neighbor about it. He's a mechanic and suggested that it may have been normal...the screws are designed to be difficult to prevent them from backing out under vibration.

Is he right or did I screw up? As I said before, I was very careful to prevent cross-threading.

These are not self locking style screws because the fairing nuts are brass & locking screws would mess them up. What most likely happened is that outer fairing shifted a little & the screw theads were rubbing against the inner fairing pass-thru hole just enough to provide resistance ... not a big deal.

Sometimes, you may have to snug them all a little then go back & tighten them all again. Or, when tightening one screw, reach with the other hand & move the fairing end thats opposite to the side you're working on.... Oh yeah, it can be a bitch at times to do.

I think your OK, keep an eye on them. With a touque wrench they sould be tightened to 20-30 inch lbs.

I have that problem with the lower right bolt. All the rest are fine. I just make sure I use that same bolt all the time (just in case it's screwy, so I don't mess up anything else).

I noticed something similar a while back - I chased the bolt holes with a pipe cleaner and blew them out with compressed air and also bought another set of screws. A close inspection of the screws revealed some of the threads were sort of flatten. I no longer use thread locker on them either as I suspected it was building up inside the bolt holes.

I just had the fairing off today and didn't notice a problem.

I had the problem with the lower left. I ran a threader thru and have not had a problem since. I now keep the same screw in the same location.
