Default Tourpack detach kit

Just a heads up for those who are installing the docking kit for the tourpack. I installed one ('06 EGC) with the front docking hardware for a sissy bar. Aside from some washers missing from the rear dock point for tour pack, I found that the supplied bolt for the rear saddlebag mount will not work. It specs. a 1/4-20X1-1/2" long hex bolt. First I noticed that it was too long and would hit the fender. No problem, I cut off a 1/4". Threaded it in and checked fender clearance. It was OK but noticed the fastener stoped well before the bracket was tight. The shoulder on the bolt is too long and it bottomed out in the "weld nut". When I attempted to remove it, it spun the "weld nut" out of it's position and fell on the floor. It was a REAL PITA to put back in.

Do yourself a favor and don't use that bolt. I thought I was going to have to pull the rear fender to put that stupid nut back in place.
I think a full threaded 1-1/4" will work. I'll find out tonight.

If you can take a few pics of the mounting points your are referring to--when it comes to describing the installation of the detachable mounting hardware a pic is definitely worth a 1,000 words.

It's been about 2 years since I installed both (sissybar and two-up detachable) sets of mounting hardware and I recall one long bolt as you describe and can't recall where it was supposed to go--I think I used one of the bolts previously removed, or a shorter one from one of the kits.

One think I did a few months ago was to mount the rear two-up detchable brackets outside the sissybar's black bracket, rather than inside (as the instructions called for)--putting it on the outside allowed me to easily remove/reinstall the chrome brackets that supply the rear mounting points for the two-up detachable rack--I seldom use the brakets since the TP is seldom on the bike and personally don't care for the chrome brackets sticking out the back of the bike when the TP isn't mounted on the bike. Very slight grinding of the forward portion of the chrome bracket (where it attaches to the black bracket)was required to provide clearance.

Here's a pic of the area that needed to be ground on the front of the chrome bracket that attaches to the black bracket:

Here's a pic of the black bracket and the two bolts used to attach the top portion of the rear chrome two-up bracket:

By mounting the chrome brackets outside the black brackets the chrome brackets are easy to remove and reinstall when I want to put the King TP on the bike, but enjoy the appearance of the bike without the brackets on the bike 95% of the time.

I added the docking kit to my '03 Ultra about 3 years ago and all I remember was what a pain in the butt it was. My advice take it slow and enjoy a beer while doing the install or you'll go completely nuts.

Same experience here on my '07. The docking kit for my old '96 RK took about 15 min. to install, so I was expecting a cakewalk. The new front docking kit was by far the most time-consuming PITA accessory I ever installed on any bike.

Just another heads up. I have the detachable kit on my '06 EGC. You might want to invest in a couple of spare 53684-96A Docking Point Rear Softail's. The plastic outer shell is prone to crumbling off. Really #^$%#'d up a planned trip for me when I went to re-install the tour pack and the plastic bits ended up on the garage floor...[:@]
