Default tips/advice on trip to TX

I'm heading to Navasota, TX from Phoenix, AZ in a few days. Planned out my trip to take 60 up through Show Low, through NM to Roswell, Enter TX, on 380 then head to 137/87 to 190 to 6into Navasota.

Does anyone have a better suggestion? tips on where to stay, what to do, what to avoid? I've given myself 3 days to get there. On the way back I was thinking of staying south going through El Paso then taking 9 to 338 then on into AZ on either 10 or 70. I'm also looking forward to some input/tips here.

Thanks in advance everyone.

Went through Eagar, Az. last spring on the way to Laughlin. Took Rt 191 and there was stil snow along the road. I don´t know what it is like in Dec. Might be better if you stay out of the mountains. Tom

Kileen, Fort Hood here. Anywhere in Texas WEST of DFW is usually pretty smooth sailing. I`ve been from Ft. Worth to Roswell and El Paso many times, on I guess most every road that goes that way.I even rode all the wayto Tucsonback in 95.Kind of a boreing ride any way ya take it, especally after a few trips, but the roads are usually OK. Hope the Texas weather holds for ya. It can be a (BE ich.)[sm=badbadbad.gif] Have a good ride![sm=biker.gif]

Any roads from about Dallas/Ft Worth and above are liable to get snow/ice anytime during this part of the year. If it was me, I would take a southern route and even so, you might get iced/snowed in. Because, the temps in the hill country have been running in the 30s at night and sometimes gets up to 60 in the day. Meanwhile, and hours ride south (San Antonio), we are running about 20 degrees warmer. Go figure.

I'll agree with this comment. It depends on what temperatures you are comfortable riding in, but this time of year you will find some freezing temps the farther north you are, especially at night. Comming in on I-10 would be the fastest route (taking the loop around San Antonio) and then cutting north to Navasota on Hwy 36 right past Columbus. You might also consider an intermediate route through Texas ....say Midland, San Angelo, Llano, Brady...Texas FM roads are usualy great to ride on in that part of the state. I would let the weather dictate my route more than the scenery.

Weather report for the Southwest is bad for this weekend. Calling for rain/snow in parts of NM along I-10 starting friday night through Saturday. Wouldn't think it based on weather today.

I'll have to keep my fingers crossed about the weather forcast. I don't mind the cold, just could do without the ice. Thanks guys, believe me I thought about just doing I-10, but its not often I get to go on a long bike ride like this so I'm trying to make it as fun and interesting as possible. Maybe on the way back I'll just hit I-10 but for now I do appreciate your input.

Watch your speed close around Navasota and the Bryan/College Station area and on 190.

Freezing temps for Saturday night and Sunday night all the way down to the South Texas coast with Rain on Saturday. Bevery careful !!!

I-10 to San Antonio would be a little further but you will miss the majority of the hill country and it's all pretty good road. Lano wouldn't be bad either like swestbrook was mentioning.
Just checked, Looks like both ways Northern and SOuthern routes will be okay during the day.

Oh, watch for deer real close. They're everywhere.

How long would you guess it takes say a minor puddle along the side of the road to thaw? Obviously if it dips below freezing then ice is a major concern while riding especially when it just rained. But if during the days its in the 60's then I would imagine that after about 8 or 9 most of it should have melted away. Again assuming it was a major puddle or on a bridge.
