Default RE: GW vs Ultra Classic

I have both a Goldwing and an Ultra, my wife
and I love both bikes so I'm not going to be
much help to you.

I can tell you this though: I/we ride between
50,000 and 80,000 miles a year. We are NOT"
motorcycle owners, we are motorcycle riders!

That being said, if we are going 21 days covering
9,000 or more miles we are taking the Wing PERIOD"

if we are going 21 days covering less then 9,000
miles there will be a debate on which bike to take.

if we are going 21 days and doing less then 7,000
miles it is all Ultra baby!

Would I ever own just one or the other, NOT A
SNOWBALLS CHANCE IN HE!!.

Only you know the answer to what you should buy
and ride. We know what we need to ride and we
own all of them as you can see in my list below.

What ever you buy, I/we hope you enjoy it for
many,many miles.

BTW: My wife is 6 foot and has bad knees, so the
1800 is never going to happen ever" The Ultra and
1500 work just fine for both of us..

The GW is modern 2wheel transportation!Driveing from point A to far away point B, then the wing is a very good tool. It's a space machine to move you from here to way over there quickly and easily.
But when yu want to RIDE A MOTORCYCLE, then the Harley gets the call.
The big nit pic used to be the wing was total reliable, and the Harley wasnt. But todays Harleys are very very good machines.
and the soul is true. Harleys soul is that Big Thumping Great looking Rumbling Mill between your legs! And you know down there amoungest the chrome and steel beats a heart of Iron.
when you throw a leg over a Harley and fire it up yu know you are on a Harley Davidson Motorcycle. Period!! If you straddle a wing and start it up it could be a Kaw or a Suki or a Yammi or a BMW, it is just a Modern 2 wheeler.
When I want to transport myself and the wife accross the country quick and easy the wing will get a call. When I want togofora motorcycle ride accross the USA then I'll fire up the Harley.
And I am old enough and blessed enough thatI do not have to force motorcycle travel. I get there when I get there and I willbe rideing a Harley.

For the true independent individualist, the idea of justifying what you ride through debate is a waste of breath and ride time.

To do, own, or be what you desire without concern for popular opinion is tobe true to yourself. To satisfy your own mind and go your own way in the face of convention, popularity, or criticism is to be free fromtheconstraints oftrying to please or convince others. This has been the driving philosophy of many great independent thinkers and doers throughout history.

In light of this fact, I ride what I want and do not need to justify it to anyone.

It still comes down to a matter of choice on what you desire in your ride. I have owned both Honda GW's and Harley EG's. Personally I love the rough, loud and old style of the Harley's. The GW's are refined machines, but like a previous post, they lack a feeling! I like to feel I am part of the motorcycle I am riding!A GWhas amind numbingfeel as I ride down the road.I give it kudo's for being powerful and smooth, but I still see it as a "Judge Dredd's"futuristic ride! I get that same feeling from the new Victory Touring Bike. I never had people come up to me and talk about my ride when I owned metric bikes, but I always have had conversations with people with my Harley's. Of all the motorcycles I have owned over the years, nothing brings out the great feeling of being on the road like a Genuine Harley Davidson!

I have freinds that ride Gold wings and freinds that ride Glides and we all play nice together. each bike has its advantages, make your own choice, it's all about being out riding!

The hardest part about owning a Honda would be telling your parents your gay.
I think everyone here had the option of buying a GW.
Some even owned em before.
Just be prepared to look in awe at the Harley-Davidson riders on the street when you say to yourself "Damb I could have had one" and the guy next to you has a stuffed toy on his wing

Think before you write.

If people could afford either one and they choose not to buy the Harley, then is makes no sense at all to say... "Damb I could have had one"

I started out riding a Honda (Not a GW) And had nothing but problems in getting it to run right. Every time I brought it to the dealer, they made it worst. I'VE never had problems with my Harley. Plus I never have to explain why I don't ride a Harley. I wouldn't ever buy anything but Harley.

This is not true about the stuffed toys at all..

I ride the Blue Ridge Mountains all year round to
the tune of 70,000 miles last year. In all those miles
I've seen more Harley Ultra's and Classic's with
stuffed toys on the trunks then I've seen Goldwing's
with stuffed toys on the trunks. In fact I'd say about
5 or 6 Harleys to 1 Goldwing has stuffed toys on the
trunk.

My Harley Ultra Classic has a stuffed toy on the
trunk and my Goldwing does not!!

I/we also ride my Ultra with our Goldwing jackets.

WHY? Because Harley doesn't make a jacket that
is comfortable for us on all day 600 Mile plus rides.
Harley makes nice jackets, but they choose to make
them for their average 2,100 mile a year riding
customers.

Both motorcycles are GREAT motorcycles, thats why
I own and ride both. You really need to cut the Wing
guys a little slack, everyone that rides a motorcycle
is part of the Brotherhood of Motorcyclists/Bikers..

I was in the same boat as you this spring. I have raced road bikes for years and I still race enduros. My wife of 7 years has never been on a bike before and I never rode a touring bike before. We looked at and rode both bikes. GW was nice but much like a honda accord. The Hd ultra wasthe bike for us before the first stop sign. The only way I can discribe it is the GW has no soul or personality. We put the trunk relocator on with arm rests and the garmin 550 for gps and xm. Great bike, looks good and feels great to be on.
