Default ECM stupid question

I apologize in advance for th stupid question. I've ridden for years but really don't know anything about how the bike works. What is ECM? I have a06 fuel injected RK. Does my bike come with some sort of ECM or do I have to add it. If I do have it, does that mean if I change mufflers I don't need a stage 1? Will the ECM compensate for the new muffler? What is a power commander and what are all these downloads and remapping everyone is talking about? I obviously need some help here.

ECM is electronic control module. If you are just changing slip on mufflers then you don't need to flash or remap the ECM. A Power Commander (PCIII), SERT (SE race tuner) Fuelpak, etc. are all modules that remap the ECM so to speak (SERT is actually the only one that actually remaps it, the others alter the signals) to compensate for mods that you do like changing the air cleaner to a high flow filter. A download is where the dealer "flashes" your ECM to compensate for the changes.

No stupid question here IMO. Others may disagree and give you some lame "funny" answer. I'll try to give you a straight one.
ECM = Engine Control Module. All fuel injected bikes have one.
PCIII = Power Commander 3 made by Dynojet. It installs on top of your ECM. It sends a signal to your injectors to put out more fuel which fixes the lean running issue with all Harleys.
STAGE 1 = Air cleaner, mufflers, and fuel controller such as PCIII, Fuelpak, T-max, etc.
ECM flash = This is the upload that your HD dealer can do when you upgrade pipes, AC, etc.
SERT = Screaming Eagle Race Tuner. A HD part that allows a tech to program your ECM.

Don't let anyone discourage you from asking questions. Also, spend a few hours doing some searches. It is the BEST tool this forum has to offer. It's like going to HARLEY COLLEGE!!!

Welcome to the forum. Enjoy.

The EMC is the Engine Control Module or thecomputer from the bike on a FI model, yes, your 06 model has one. On my 06 ultra it's under the right side cover. If you only do a muffler change you will not have to change the ECM but if you do add a stage one you will have to add or change out the ECM for some type of fuel management system like a PCIII, SERTor Thundermax. There are several types on the market, if you do a search you'll find all kinds of them and what you go with depends on your needs, future plans and money to spend. The downloads or maps are the instructions for the setup of the Fuel Management system to tell the bike how to run, they are the program to the Fuel Management System which replaces the ECM that comes on your bike. This is just a very brief description for your question, there are others who can give you a better answer. Do a search and read all you can find, like I said there are people here who know this stuff inside out. Hope this helps. The only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask, then mess something up because of it. Good Luck.

ECM stands for electronic control module. Your bike has at least 2.
The fuel injection computer. Electronic fuel injection requires a computer to run.
A turn signal module that also controls alarm functions (if it has an alarm).
And a spedo module.
The one I think you are refering to is the fuel injection ECM.

There are many fuel injection tuning devices on the market. A few are; Dyno Jet Power Commander, Revtech DFO, Vance & Hines fuelpak.
The basic function of these is to fine tune your fuel injection system to compensate for modification you made to your engine that cause your engine to run leaner(less fuel than needed for proper combustion).
Mods that can cause this are a free flowing air cleaner, performance heads, diferent camshafts, different exhaust systems, and non stock mufflers.

However if you change only the mufflers and leave all else stock you will
probably not need any fuel tuning device. You will if you use a free flow air
cleaner.
The Power Commander is tunable with downloads over the internet or with a laptop and software, by making a custom download map(preferably with the bike on a dyno).

The simple to tune devices include the Techlusion TFI and Revtech DFO (same manufacturer) and V&H fuel pack. These are easily tuned without a computer.
There are also other devices available, some are even selftuning with02 sensors. I hope this helps some. Mark
