This will be our first summer with an Ultra. We normally ride two up and wondered what is recommended for keeping cool while riding during the heat of the summer. Do the adjustable fairing deflectors make a big difference, which kind? Any other recommendations? Last couple of bikes were water cooled and need to make sure the wife enjoys riding? Appreciate your experience and advice.
You will find the fairing lowers very helpful in this regard, as they open up to send some cooling air to the motor (and your legs). You can take them right off if you like, but I have found that keeping them on and opening the vent actually works better (plus you can close them at night when it cools down).
That said, the bike will run a bit hot, and you will notice this at stop lights, and in stop and go traffic. The good news is that your wife will not notice it much...you will bear the brunt!!!
Don't trade safety for comfort...if it's too hot for leather, there are a lot of great textile jackets out there (i.e. Joe Rocket, etc) that offer superior protection with a lot less weight and heat retention.
Congrats on your Ultra. You and your wife will love it 2-up. A truly superior machine.

I will second the safety versus comfort statement. I have 3 jackets, leather, non-vented textile, vented textile with CE armour and a mesh pull over with CE armour. If you get the temps right each one is very comfortable in Florida. I actual compared riding in the middle of summer with a t-shirt versus the mesh pullover with a t-shirt or tank top under and the mesh was cooler, no direct sun to my skin and when moving the air through the mesh was cooling.
