Ride an 02 classic - turned my volume all the way down and now is not responding to volume up - the clock stays on - when I push the button up for volume nothing happens - when I push the button in it goes to bass and trebble but only will respond to down volume, bass,treble- can't hear anything - what did you do to get the volume to work - went to Harley the switch part# 71593-96 is $35 - is there an easier fix ?
gls: You can test the switch/handlebar wiring but you willcan usethe HD Electronic Diagnostic manual for your bike--I've had good luck asking to look at the copies maintained in my dealer's service department and copying the pages I needed. Basically, the procedure is to disconnect the handlebar wiring inside the fairing and using a jumper wire to connect the wire pairs that control the switch function (in essence you are doing the switch function with the jumper wire). If the function is okay using the jumper wire, then the problem is with the handlebar wiring (perhaps a pinched or bare wire shorting) or the switch is defective.
If you have the HD Service manual for your bike, the wiring diagrams will identify the wire functions for the audio system under the "matrix." Identify the wires for volume up; disonnect the handlebar wiring inside the fairing; and, using your jumper wire connect the two wires that control "volume up" going into the radio. If the "volume up" works, then the problem is in your handlebar wiring for that wire or switch.
