Heh, down here there'd have been about two dozen doors opening on that video.
In Texas people open there car doors on the Highway for no reason?

Lane splitting, in my opinion, is simply stupid and an accident waiting to happen.

I'm sure you would think that if its not something you see on a daily Basis. Here in California you see it daily from the time your a child strapped in the back of your parents carup until you get your own drivers license that you should be prepared for it and expect to see it. Normally you never see bikes going at extreme speeds between cars on the freeway, as BlueRose stated its about 5-10 MPH over the limit or the rate of traffic to avoid being stuck between cars. IN California its safe, I cant speak on where you live.

Lane splitting with rules should be lagalized in all states for the same reason right turn on red was initiated. It's an energy saver and is efficient. It makes no sense to sit in a traffic jam and cook the engine when you could be moving slowly and safely between vehicles. If it were leagalized, then there would be less intentional "squeezing" by motorists to block the way.

Sensible lane splitting is ok. What that video shows is someone on a rice burner who, if he keeps riding like that, wil soon take himself or herself out of the gene pool.

I live in CA and although I am slightly hesitant to admit it, that video looks pretty familiar. Yes, he (she?) must be on a sportbike because he's going through some narrow spaces. At times he was going maybe 5-10 mph faster than was prudent, but overall this looked like an experienced rider. You learn a sixth sense of anticipating what the cagers will do. And on a sportbike (which I used to ride) you can tiptoe around most close calls. The risky part is when he wasn't splitting - when a few car lengths would open in the lane in front on him. One of the tricks of the trade is to beware the open space. That's when a car can jump out and kill you. Really, the rest of the stuff, even the tight spaces between big rigs, is just something you get used to. I will say, though, I do not ride like this on my Harley. Just too much mass to change directions quickly if needed.

No, but they might do it if they were stuck in traffic and "shucks, didn't see the ******* on the crotch rocket coming up so fast".

The only instance where I know lane splitting is legal in Texas (actually, it's really just access to the shoulder lane), is in line to take oneof the barrier island ferry boats in Port Aransas. And I've seen people stuck in line for hours intentionally open their doors at bikes passing on the right.

So yeah, I'm sure those same people wouldn't think twice aboutspooking a crotch rocket that tried to split lanes in traffic like the idiot on that video. Then again, it's illegal here (as is much of what the guy in that video appears to be) and in the end it would be the biker who was atfault.
